Town skipper Nathan is your vote for Player of the Year again

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Nathan Thompson with the Advertiser’s Swindon Town Player of the Year trophy Nathan Thompson with the Advertiser’s Swindon Town Player of the Year trophy

NATHAN Thompson described himself as “absolutely over the moon” after picking up the Swindon Advertiser STFC Player of the Year trophy for the second time in as many seasons.

The full-back, a product of the club’s youth academy, has taken on the mantle of captain at the County Ground in 2013/14 and helped lead the Robins to a top-eight finish in League One.

Victory over Rotherham United this afternoon will guarantee Thompson and his teammates seventh in a topsy-turvy campaign, both on and off the pitch.

The 23-year-old received a whopping 52 per cent of the public vote, seeing off competition from goalkeeper Wes Foderingham, who was picked by 23 per cent of readers of the Adver and Jay McEveley, who came third with seven per cent.

Votes were also cast for Alex Pritchard, Louis Thompson, Nicky Ajose, Yaser Kasim, Massimo Luongo, Troy Archibald-Henville, Ryan Mason, Raphael Rossi Branco, Nile Ranger and Ben Gladwin.

However Thompson was your choice to land the award and he told the Adver when presented with the trophy at the County Ground yesterday how delighted he was to be recognised by the fans.

He said: “I’m absolutely over the moon, picking this award up for the second season on the bounce. Personally, I’ve felt that this season has been one of transition, both on and off the pitch. For me personally, I’ve changed position and I’m now a lot more attack-minded and I think that’s taken a little bit of getting used to.

“I’m surprised to be picking up the award because I’ve felt as though at the start of the season it took a little bit of time to get used to the role I’ve been playing. Towards the end of the season I feel I’ve come on and improved in that position and hopefully now I can move forward. With this award, I’d like to say a big thank you to the fans.

“It was a transitional season, there were a lot of players leaving and a lot of newcomers and it took time. It’s been a little bit inconsistent at times but as a whole I think we’re very, very happy and there are a lot of positives to take forward to next season.”

Thompson’s name will now be inscribed alongside the likes of Colin Calderwood and Don Rogers on the trophy, and the skipper is honoured to be among such illustrious company.

“The boys that are on the trophy I’ve grown up watching or I’ve played alongside and they’ve been fantastic for the club, so to have my name on the trophy two years in a row is a real great honour,” he said.

Didn't see that coming, could you only pick from 3 names?
We want a re count, as I'm sure Pritchard would.
Good luck tho a great player only to be let down by his discipline.

You're probably just trolling, which is fair enough, but come on, give Nathan some credit. He is a consistent high performer and fully deserves this accolade.

My own vote went to Wes, but I'm not at all disappointed to see Nathan win it.

Pritchard? Not a chance. Didn't play well consistently enough and is too much of a hot head.

I didn't vote for Pritchard as I said many times good player but not in the same class as Ritchie IMO.
If you read my post I said what a great player he is.
I think you contradicted yourself about Pritchard being hot headed, because the last two seasons Nathan has been a prime example of this only bad mark against him. People moaned at ranger not being a team player but that should also count against a captain who should be setting standards to his fellow players.
My vote would not have counted because I would have chosen ajose simply because he gave everything, scored valuable goals and a great discipline record. But I know no one else would have voted for him, because they are clueless about football.

Just a shame a fantastic player like Nathan lets himself down by his discipline
That's why I thought wes should be captain. Bad choice to give a player the armband when he lets himself down by his per petulant yellows/reds.
Shame he won't have his kit on to receive it today.

Would have to agree with you and others, the premium rate cost would have put many off from voting. I also agree with many others that Wes would have been my choice if they had run a poll on match day live. I like Nathan and think he has a great future in the game. I also liked his honest appraisal of his season in this interview. I think the lad took a long time getting over the ankle injury from the previous season and lost some of his defensive qualities adapting to the new role Cooper has him playing. I also think it was a bit too much to take on the captains role from Wardy, but we do seem to be a bit limited with a seasoned leader, so the lad obviously did his best he could and didn't let anyone down apart from the red card.

That all said he has been chosen as this year's player of the season, congratulations Nat and hope the town voodoo of player of the year departing to pastures green will not include you.

In case anyone didn't pick up on Grim's subtle remark he hopes he plays well this afternoon, unless I'm mistaken he should be starting a ban I don't think appeals are allowed on yellows, but I haven't read anything confirming that he's yet been banned, so I may be mistaken.

Good post Grim, not many cards dished out to you choice of 3, must say on the field all 3 were outstanding.

Thanks for confirming what I thought that Nat will not be available today, I think Cooper said earlier in the week Jack Bartham is going to get a start, hope he earns an extension to his contract, very good prospect if he's given the chance as is Alex Smith who hasn't played so much because of injury.

People talk about only missing a few games and having a decent disciplinary record - yet no one even mentions Luongo in to 3 or even 5!
.
The kid has played the most games - 52 - 7 ahead of the next Wes and Ward
.
Plus he has only picked up 5 yellows all season - with no suspensions - plus I don't think one of those was for back chatting!
.
Yes his form has been up and down - which is why he would fall behind some others - but certainly should be short listed!
.
Top 5 are in alphabetical order: Byrne Foderingham Luongo Pritchard and N.Thompson
.
McEveley has ended the campaign with a bang - but misses out on the top 5 for me as he was very hit and miss for long periods. Plus at 29 has no excuse for the red must which we have seen in Pritchard.
.
Ranger couldn't be included despite clearly being the best player as he missed far too much if the season - and I don't mean the last few weeks due to injury!
.
Ajose and Stephens can't be included for me as only here for a small portion - but would be up there if they had been here all year like Pritchard
.
Troy again as only in since late Jan just doesn't have enough games to be considered for me
.
Ironic as it is as pretty much everyone qualifies for it but Young Player would be Louis Thompson as he has had an outstanding seaso for a first season pro
.
For me it would be Pritchard for the main one as 8 goals and 10 assists is a great return for a winger and he has been MOTM numerous times - and I don't mean the pointless sponsors one
.
After that it would be Fodders and Nathan completing the podium.

Smirg - you should look at Pritchard in 3 seasons and compare him to Ritchie!
.
As I've said before "lead boots" was classed as a desperation signing and not rated at all when he first arrived
.
Yet in his last 2 seasons really stepped up and matured into the excellent player he is now
.
Pritchard needs that same period to grow and develop - if we were lucky enough to sign him - I think time he is 24 he would be up there with Ritchie
.
I tell you this - I would have loved Ritchie on the right, Pritchard on the left behind Ranger!

My 1-2-3 on games played( not appearance) 1- ajose 2- wes 3-ranger Just a shame a fantastic player like Nathan lets himself down by his discipline That's why I thought wes should be captain. Bad choice to give a player the armband when he lets himself down by his per petulant yellows/reds. Shame he won't have his kit on to receive it today.[/p][/quote]Smirg - you should look at Pritchard in 3 seasons and compare him to Ritchie! . As I've said before "lead boots" was classed as a desperation signing and not rated at all when he first arrived . Yet in his last 2 seasons really stepped up and matured into the excellent player he is now . Pritchard needs that same period to grow and develop - if we were lucky enough to sign him - I think time he is 24 he would be up there with Ritchie . I tell you this - I would have loved Ritchie on the right, Pritchard on the left behind Ranger! . Now that would have been a strike-force!!! London Red
