Smith vows to silence the boo boys

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Michael Smith Michael Smith

MICHAEL Smith is hopeful he’ll be able to win his County Ground critics over but if he can’t he’s determined the boo boys won’t affect his mental state.

The striker, signed from Charlton Athletic for an initial £100,000 in January, scored a 93rd-minute winner at Coventry City on Good Friday, as the Robins beat their Midlands hosts 2-1.

It was the frontman’s seventh goal in 17 appearances since joining Town but he has still yet to endear himself to sections of the club’s crowd following a handful of nervous performances, during which his first touch has on occasion deserted him.

Regardless, Smith has pledged to improve every aspect of his game during his time with Town and he is keen to show his doubters and detractors his determination to succeed.

He told the Advertiser: “You’re going to get boo boys wherever you go, football is all about opinions, as long as I keep working hard and giving 100 per cent on the pitch hopefully I’ll win them round. If not, it doesn’t affect me.

“I’ve just got to keep working hard and working on certain aspects of my game, which I am doing in training. Hopefully I’ll win them over but it’s not going to affect me one bit if I don’t.”

With three games of the season remaining, Swindon still have an outside shot of making the League One play-offs.

They require Peterborough United to lose two of their matches and the Robins must take maximum points from their own, but Smith stressed that he and his teammates feel absolutely no pressure at present - a situation in which they appear to thrive.

“Everyone’s buzzing with the win (at Coventry) but with Monday, with the way it’s been recently, we’ve got no pressure.

“Everything is on Peterborough,” he said.

“There are three games to go now and anything can happen in football - we’ve seen it before - hopefully we can get the win on Monday and then kick on in the last two.

“I’ve watched Bradford. They’ve got (James) Hanson up front and he’s a massive handful but with the way we play football hopefully we’ll beat them on the day.

“We’ve got big lads - we’ve got Jack (Stephens), Troy (Archibald-Henville), we can give it as much as we get it so I’m looking forward to it.”

Seven goals in seventeen games is not a bad return really, and sometimes I think it's the mentality of some fans not the players that's in question.

Fair play to the lad, he actually tracked back and won the ball by our own 18 yard line before he scored. He does have to work on his first touch and control though, it was a bit dire through the match.
I hope that goal will have given him a bit more confidence.

On Friday the bloke in front of me kept giving Smithy stick so I made a point of pointing out each time he tracked back, each time he forced the opposition into making a mistake and each time he won a header etc. At the end this bloke conceded that he'd had a good game. I'm pleased to see that Smithy is staying behind after training - I guess that's to work on his hold-up play. Fair play to the lad.

Fed up with fans getting on players backs during the game as it has a negative impact.
Have a moan afterwards.

Playing the lone striker is a tough job and he is doing well at it.
Give the lad a break.

can only echo many of the comments on here, cant believe some of stick he gets when he always gives 100% every game. Yes his first touch needs work (even coops has said this) but at 22 he can improve not like he is 30 odd. Also I don't actually think despite his size that he is natural target man, the best things I've seen him do are some good passes after dropping off into hole or wide areas and attacking good crosses. We have been spoilt this season with the hold up play of Ranger who has a premiership quality first touch and it is completely unfair to compare Smith to that and give him the abuse he has had. He has notched 7 in 17 worked his socks off for the team he deserves our support not abuse, and whoever thinks that he will get better with abuse from his own fans is crazy. Hope he notches today, COYR!

It's totally peverse when you have two young players, both with development areas, yet the one who gets abuse by some fans is a proven goalscorer, works hard in every area of the pitch, yet the same fans fete the other who in their eyes can do no wrong and is regarded as a match winner supreme...

Support whoever wears "the shirt" , not just the player "you think" should wear the shirt.

Give the young man encouragement. That's what he needs and not to be slagged off by a thoughtless section. He's a young man learning his trade and will get better with the good coaching staff that we have.

Steve White (remember him?) said during the commentary on Friday, that it took him until the age of 26, before he got certain aspects of his game right!

With all due respect dod this is the 2nd time you have commented on Bart73's postings today, both times attempting to ridicule.
Have you considered that English may not be His or Hers first language?
With a little more effort from you, it is possible to understand the theme of the comment.
You should have more respect for our fellow Town supporters.

What town fans don't realise is, as paying customers they are entitled do as they want regard booing, it's no different to clapping when they score is it.
I will say the only game I have booed in my time being a town fan is away to Sheffield as that was the only way to get through to some people.
Smith could have got loads of verbal Monday but we as fans stuck together and supported him and it paid off, saying that I think it only paid off when storey was introduced, having scored the last kick at home against then they looked frightened with his pace, unsettling them.
It don't mean smith should be subbed having another stinker, it should mean a different formation gives him more confidence, which it did.
Outside the ground many people said how the helll did he score.
The fact was he just kept going and done his best.
A great win against a tricky side that we done the double over
Keep it going smithie, you won't get booed by me unless you dont score a hat trick lol

No matter what we think of various aspects of Michael Smith's game, he has proved he can score goals. That's the number 1 requirement for any striker. Someone mentioned Steve White. There was nothing elegant about his game but Boy, could he score goals. I suspect Michael could be in the same mould.

Keep them crosses coming in from the wings and Smithy will score. We'll get our £100,000's worth, don't worry.
