CHIPPENHAM Town failed to build on their early lead as they slipped to their 14th away league defeat of the season at Hitchin Town.
The visitors, now mathematically safe after last weekend's 2-0 win over Banbury United, took the lead courtesy of Joe McClennan's 24th-minute opener.
But the home side were back on level terms on 37 minutes as Gary Wharton found the net and they went into the break ahead as Gary Jones fired home a penalty on the stroke of half time.
Wharton wrapped up the three points for the hosts with his second on 70 minutes.
Chippenham host Hungerford Town in their final home match of the season at Hardenhuish Park on Easter Monday.
Attendance: 293
