ROYAL Wootton Bassett’s U8s youngsters had a training session to remember on Tuesday when Wales and British Lions legend Shane Williams dropped in to the Ballards Ash club.

Winger Williams, capped 87 times by Wales and a veteran of three British & Irish Lions tours, ran a session with Sean Holley, former head coach of Welsh regional side Ospreys after a chance encounter with Mike and Jenny Wood, whose grandson Ben Conner plays for the U8s, on last summer’s Lions tour in Australia.

Bassett member Alec Adams said: “They light-heartedly touched on the possibility of someone of Shane’s stature turning up at Bassett to coach the U8s, exchanged details and left it at that.

“Some 10 months later, true to his word, Shane contacted Mike and confirmed he would be here.’’
