NORTH WILTS Indoor Club’s annual championship finals staged last week provided several surprise results.

Alex Jacobs was the most successful, winning four out of six events she entered, but she missed out in the ladies pairs and mixed fours competitions.

Molly Manning was next best with three victories while Jean Collier and Sue Cooke both recorded two wins.

On the men’s front, father and son Steve and Wayne Snook both notched a hat-trick of titles but no other male won more than one competition.

Jacobs won the ladies singles beating Janet Hardie who had lost in last year’s final to Cooke, while Wayne Snook took the men’s singles final defeating Bill Williams.

The duo of Jacobs and Snook will now have the honour of representing North Wilts in next season’s (2014-15) champion of champions national singles competition.

Jacobs second success came in the ladies triples with Cooke and Manning while the same trio plus Jacobs' mother Judy Selbie won the ladies fours competition.

Jacobs combined with Steve Snook for her fourth victory coming from 12-6 down at ten ends to beat Cooke and Wayne Snook 23-18 in the mixed pairs.

The Snooks completed their trebles by combining with Justin Davis to win the men’s triples and playing in the fours with Barrie Snook and Keith Hutchens for an easy win.

However, the father and son duo saw their hopes of a fourth success in the men’s pairs go at the hands of Barry Freeman and Trevor Cooke.

The Snooks led 18-15 at 15 ends but trailed 21-20 at 20 ends with Freeman and Cooke then collecting a crucial count of two for a shock 23-20 victory.

The ladies pairs provided another close finish with Irene Button and Collier 10-5 up against Norma Rowden and Barbara Shepheard at five ends but 21-17 down at 15 come back to draw 22-22 at 20 ends and brag a single on the last for victory.

Manning completed her treble and Collier her double in the mixed fours championship.

Together with Ian Manning and Clive Swift they had eliminated the favourites the Snooks, plus Cooke and Jacobs in the semi-finals and took the final 18-13.

Three events - men’s, ladies and mixed pairs - under the Bridge banner were staged for players who had not won a competition at the North Wilts club with Dave Edmonds contesting two finals and ending with a 50 per cent win ratio.

NATIONAL pairs champions in 2010, Cooke and Jacobs were looking to regain the title this year.

However, the North Wilts duo saw their hopes disappear in their opening match in the final stages at Melton & District.

They lost in the last 16 last Saturday to the Norfolk combination of Under 25 internationals Louise Catchpole and Rebecca Field, also women’s world champion last year, 21-14.

Cooke and Jacobs were tied 11-11 at 14 ends and only 16-14 down at 19 but then dropped a three and a two to finally lose by seven shots.

ATTENTION now turns to the outdoor bowls scene with many of the clubs in the area staging their 2014 opening drives this weekend or next Monday (North Wilts).
