Town squad set to be thinned out over the summer

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Mark Cooper Mark Cooper

MARK Cooper expects to see his Swindon Town squad trimmed down to a more manageable size before next season, with the Robins boss anticipating four summer signings to make up a permanent playing staff of around 20.

Town currently have 35 professionals on their books, five of whom are on loan from other clubs, and 17 of those see their current contracts expire at the end of the campaign.

No negotiations have yet begun with those players who are hoping to earn an extended stay at the County Ground while budgets are finalised but, when questioned by the Advertiser on how he sees his recruitment drive shaping up over the coming months, Cooper revealed that cutting down the numbers in training would be a likely outcome.

“I’ve been at a game nearly every night this week. We’re doing our homework to try to make sure our recruitment is right for next year,” he said.

“I’ve got a big list but how many of them are actually feasible I’m not too sure.

“Obviously you’re aware of players who might be available and we leave it up to Lee. I’ll make my recommendations and see where we go.

“I think we’re looking for maybe four players to add to the squad. I think you look at your positions and you probably have four or five targets for each position. You’ll have A,B,C and D, start with A and work your way down.

“Some you can get tied up really quickly and more or less agreed and signed before (July 1). We might be in a position where, with any players that are at the higher end, we’d have to wait until right at the end to see if they get fixed up or not.

“We’ve got 16 players that will be under contract at the end of the season.

“I think it will be around 20. Coaching-wise, there is only myself and Luke and any bigger and it becomes a little hard to manage in terms of numbers we have to train.

“When everyone’s fit it’s a big number for us. We try to split it up. One day I’ll take defenders and Luke will take midfield players and strikers, and we’ll swap it round and do it like that.”

If we hace 16 under contract at the end of the season, and plan to add 4 for a squad of 20, that suggests that everyone who's contract is up will be on their way out. Surely that can't be right

Presumably those nearing end of contracts who are " unwants " can be disposed of with a bronze/silver handshake ?

Seems to me that the under laying message here is quality not quantity, which is something positive and I guess efficiency over sentimentality. Some hard and difficult decisions to be made, but if Power is to take the club forward it is probably the only way to go. The pounds and pence coming in will have the last say, as a club we have to survive, perhaps if Black had been more involved in this aspect , and PDC not allowed the vast number of players on his merry go round then the episode that led to Jedco would have averted.

This season with a squad of 35 Cooper has at times struggled to find enough players to even fill the bench due to illnesses, injuries and suspensions. How does he think he is going to cope with only 20 players available to him?

I personally think the numbers will be slightly higher if he includes youngsters who will probably be farmed out on loan and we will probably be bringing 5 loanees ourselves for a first team squad of about 25.

You need a few more than 20 but those that will be here are by and large already first team or fringe of first team. Storey, Gladwin and Barker the ones that have a bit to prove.

So in probability Williams, Navarro, Troy, Harley, Jay, Bartram, Belford and the majority of youngsters will be moving on, together with the lowness.

Guess the 4 coming in need to be a dominant centre back and centre mid, left back and a mobile centre forward, and if we lose the current loan players as I expect we will they need replacing in those positions too although wouldn't be surprised to see Hall return.

I was feeling really happy and positive 2day thinking this is the day..
STFC TO WIN 3.1 with a great performance on the pitch THEN I read this as are plan for next season...

Slashing the budget AND PLAYING STAFF..IS THIS THE END OF RANGER AND TAH....I know we still have players on high wages from pdc and jw days that have to go BUT most of the 16 players that are under contract cant get in to the team when we are on a terrible run so this fills me with no hope what so ever...
Expecting s/ticket holders to renew PAYING MORE
Anyone know what the s/ticket sales were this season as I think next season will be well down...
I kow it sounds like im moaning but Im not as love my football club and I xan only see it going in 1direction and thats not the c/hhip

I'd be keen to see Troy stay and sign up Jack Stephens as he looks a great prospect. Need a left back though as Jay's solid but his best days are behind him and injury prone.

I see it as 14 under contract with 3 where we have the option so really 17 a MC also said players who will be here next season and played Smith who is one with an option
.
I think this quote is excluding loans and looking at STFC players
.
Think MC also just rounding when saying 20 as expect it to be slightly higher probably 22 - with 3 loanees taking it to 25 as discussed the other day
.
The 17 I see it as:
.
Foderingham
Belford
N.Thompson
Barthram
Ward
Byrne
A.Smith
Tijane
L.Thompson
Kasim
Luongo
Harley
Gladwin
Ranger
M.Smith
Storey
Barker
.
CB obviously needs addressing as we only have Ward signed up. TAH and Oakley extended and Stephens back on season long loan would do me fine
.
TAH and Stephens looking great with 2 clean sheets out of 2. Oakley highly rated and big but with ball playing ability so good cover and Ward also providing cover as a player Coach
.
CM plenty with 5 but no real dominant box to box player. Didn't see yesterday - but hopefully will see Gladwin against Sheff to see if he could be that player?
.
Though don't want to rely in a kid in his first full season so one more CM for me
.
Wingers short with only Tijane. So 2 more wide players - as Byrne can make it 4
.
Up top is fine with those 4 - Smith growing and 6 so far not bad!
.
Ranger best in L1 say no more!
.
Storey offers pace and an alternative and Barker offers something different too so focus elsewhere for me
.
So 2 CB, 1CM and 2 wingers needed perm for me
.
Then 1 CB hopefully Stephens on loan plus others depending on who we can get who will improve us

Ranger best in L1 say no more ! According to the news Nile has been naughty again. I think he`s a great striker but I think Power and Coops will soon agree that he cant behave himself and is still a poor example to the younger members of the squad .They will surely let him go e`er long.

Just seen that. That could be the 16 then if it has been decided enough is enough

If that is the case then CF has to be right up there with a CB (unless TAH retained) as we will need someone special up top - no top team doesn't have someone special
