CHIPPENHAM Town’s Ben John paid tribute to a fine performance from his side as they finally began to address their away form at Bedford Town last weekend.

Lee Phillips found the net twice while James Guthrie was also on target as Mark Collier’s men saw off bottom-of-the-table Bedford.

The Bluebirds notched up a first win away from Hardenhuish Park since last October and goalkeeper John is hoping last Saturday’s triumph spells the end of his team’s travel sickness.

“It was a long overdue win. It’s the third game we’ve won away and we know that we’re capable of doing it but when you haven’t been doing it, it’s a bit nerve-racking and I think the boys were a bit hesitant at the start,” said John.

“But we played them off the park. The problem in the last few weeks has been not scoring enough and conceding sloppy goals but it could have been a cricket score.

“We’re playing some good football and creating chances – that’s been coming for a while.

“I think the confidence of the lads is there but sometimes, I don’t know if we think we’re better than everyone. At the end of the day, the league table doesn’t lie and when you’re down among it, you’ve got to pick up points in games like that.

“If you look at the teams we’ve lost to, that’s four of the bottom six teams and that 15 points would take us right up the table.

“Results don’t go our way sometimes and it has been a stop-start season but now Tom (Jones) and Mark have got us playing how they want to play, it’s settled down and we’re getting there.

“It’s great to go away and win on a beautiful day and you get all of the supporters who come up with us – you’ve got to take your hat off to them.”
