SWINDON Town owner Lee Power has confirmed that the club have scrapped plans to move their training bases to the Beversbrook facility in Calne.

Former chairman Jed McCrory had outlined plans to move both the senior and youth academy set-ups 25 minutes down the road during his stewardship of the club, a move which was originally scheduled to take place last autumn.

However, after assuming charge of Town in December, Power opted against the switch, citing the distance players would have to travel to reach training. He is now in discussions with a number of possible alternatives, including St Luke’s School and Swindon Supermarine at South Marston, when Swindon’s stay at their current Liddington base ends this summer.

Power told BBC Wiltshire: “We finish at Liddington this year. My predecessor (Jed McCrory) was looking at Calne and the first thing I did was knock that on the head because we should be training in Swindon not Calne.

“I’ve been working with the local authority trying to identify sites. One is St Luke’s and I get on well with Jezz (Webb) at Supermarine and there’s a possibility of going up there as well.”

Power also stressed that he would not rush into a decision regarding Nile Ranger’s contract at the County Ground. The striker, who reportedly failed to attend court in Wales on a drink drive charge last month, sees his current deal at Town expire at the end of the season.

Swindon have the option to extend the former Newcastle frontman’s stay by a further 12 months and Ranger was in SN1 on Saturday to talk to Power and manager Mark Cooper, but the Robins’ owner insisted proper deliberations would be had before a decision was made.

“We haven’t really had time to assess him because when he picked up his injury he had to go to Newcastle to see his counsel,” said Power.

“I just had half an hour with Nile. He had a lot on his shoulders leading up to this case. Nile’s Nile but the penny’s got to drop sooner or later.

“While he’s injured it’s going to give us an opportunity to have conversations.

“He should be playing a lot higher but the reason he isn't is because he doesn’t behave himself.”
