DAVE Myler is thanking his lucky stars that he was allowed an early birthday present this year after he hit his fourth-ever hole-in-one with his brand new set of clubs.

Myler, who turned 52 last Sunday, hit an ace at Ogbourne Downs golf club during the Greenwood Trophy mixed matchplay competition on Saturday, February 22, using his fresh-out-of-the-box 6 iron to sink a tee shot straight into the 17th hole.

Myler, who works as a delivery driver, has now completed a hat-trick of aces on the 17th at Ogbourne, having also previously holed out on the 15th, and he’s glad wife Mary let him get his hands on his new toys a week early.

“I’ve had the same set for over 20 years so the wife got me some new clubs for my birthday and I wanted to use them as soon as I got them,” said Myler, who lives in Swindon and has been a member at the club, north of Marlborough, for almost 25 years.

“I was competing with Mary against another couple and the girls were down on the green when I took my shot – it was into a heavy wind so you’d usually use an eight or a nine iron but I went for the six.

“I thought that I was going to be close but when it went out of sight, they yelled that it had gone in.

“I’ve had four aces now and I even went close to getting another one last weekend when I hit a shot on the eighth – it lipped the hole and just came back out again.

“I play off a five handicap but I think that I can definitely get that down now that I’ve got these new clubs.”
