Barthram wants contract talks

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Jack Barthram Jack Barthram

JACK Barthram is hopeful he has done enough to convince Swindon Town manager Mark Cooper that he deserves an extended stay at the County Ground.

Barthram’s one-year contract with the Robins expires at the end of the season, although the former Tottenham Hotspur star’s deal features an option of a further year which the club could activate over the summer.

The 20-year-old has only made 13 appearances for Town since arriving in June, scoring one goal, but having battled his way back into the starting XI for the 1-1 draw with Crawley Town on Tuesday night Barthram is likely to see his terms renewed.

The full-back revealed he has not spoken about the possibility of an extended spell in Wiltshire with the club’s management but he has high hopes of staying.

“We haven’t really had much talk about it and we will just have to see what happens really,” he said.

“Hopefully I’ve done enough but I would like to play a bit more, although that’s the gaffer’s decision. He’s sees me in training though so I hope I’ve done enough.”

Some fans had been calling for Barthram’s inclusion in Cooper’s matchday line-up for several weeks prior to Tuesday night and the defender admitted he has found a lack of gametime frustrating.

“It’s been frustrating not to have been involved for a little while but I have to keep working hard and give the gaffer a tough decision when it comes to picking the team,” he said.

“It’s hard but I’m only young and I’ve come from playing under 21 football at Tottenham to be playing first team football now and that’s what really keeps me going to be honest.

“Over the winter we haven’t been able to play many reserve or development games because of the wet weather and the wet pitches bit getting some games in would be helpful.”

Agree Jock but when he has played has looked not to bad but even when he has played well he seems to be back on the bench the next game As I have said get to 55 points and give these players a chance.

Agree...he's only 20 and needs a proper chance before we make a judgement.
