PEWSEY Vale put up a good performance despite slipping to defeat against promotion contenders Supermarine Played in blustery conditions on a sticky wet pitch both teams did well to produce a fast-paced game of rugby.

Both defences were tested and stood up well. In what was mainly a forward battle two breakaway tries by the home team in each half proved the telling scores.

Pewsey started well and for the whole of the first half dominated the scrums.

It was against the run of play that Supermarine scored the first try of the match a quarter of an hour in with a driving maul from a five metre line out.

Pewsey came back strongly, taking territorial advantage with a passage of forward pressure play in the home team’s half.

After ten minutes, from a scrum 15 metres out number eight Phil Vallis picked up and drove for the line shrugging off two defenders to score out wide.

From the restart Pewsey kept up the pressure, but a breakout from their own 22 put Supermarine on the front foot and they sprinted in from 40 metres to score by the corner flag.

Trailing 10-5 at half time, the loss of Pewsey lock Darren Draper was to be a telling factor as Pewsey relinquished their domination of the scrum.

Territory was equally shared in the second half.

Pewsey were held up twice, but it was the home team that finished their chances.

Fifteen minutes in, a five metre scrum was driven over for a try.

Ten minutes later a breakout from 60m wrapped up the points for the home side.
