The wind and heavy rain caused more problems for teams from the Trowbridge Windows & Conservatories, Trowbridge & District League which for a ninth successive Saturday saw a decimated fixture programme with just one match from the scheduled surviving the elements.

The Wiltshire Junior Cup matches featuring White Horse and Freshford against respective opponents Old Town United and Fratello’s were postponed for a third successive week.

However Freshford, who had offered to stage their game with Fratello’s, were in action as they hosted a quickly-rescheduled game with Castle Combe to save the league from a total wash out.

Division One leaders Freshford carried out three pitch inspections and worked on their Brown’s Park surface to ensure the game would go ahead.

Both manager Chris Birleson and groundsman Andy Backman were rewarded for their efforts in getting the game played as a tenth win of the season saw them open up a five-point gap over closest challengers North Bradley.

However their 3-2 win was a nail biter as Paul Sanderson’s Combe side almost snatched a draw, after the hosts had opened up a 3-0 lead.

Freshford, who had won the reverse fixture 6-3 back in October, took the game by the scruff of the neck and looked to be in total command after the first 45 minutes as goals from Chris Maskrey, Ricky Trott who both scored from set pieces and Mark Gerrish, who scored from the penalty spot, had given them their lead.

The second period saw a complete turnaround in things as Freshford who were excellent in the first half were very poor, but that was to take nothing away from Castle Combe who staged a spirited fightback as they clawed their way back into the contest which they appeared to be out of at the break.

Carl Dawson got Combe back in the game and Martin Riddell reduced their deficit to the odd goal but some stout defending from the hosts saw them cling on for what in the end was a nervy win for Birleson’s side, who will look to raise their game for what hopefully will be their delayed Junior Cup quarter-final tie with Swindon League heavyweights’ Fratello’s this coming Saturday.
