Carroll’s failed appeal convinces Town not to contest McEveley red

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Jay McEveley walks off after receiving his red card against Peterborough Jay McEveley walks off after receiving his red card against Peterborough

SWINDON Town decided against appealing the red card handed to Jay McEveley last week after seeing the Football Association reject West Ham’s attempt to get Andy Carroll’s recent dismissal overturned.

Robins manager Mark Cooper told the Advertiser that Town felt an appeal against McEveley’s sending-off, incurred for a clumsy tackle on Britt Assombalonga at Peterborough United last Wednesday, would be a “waste of time” given the precedent set by the sport’s governing body in upholding Howard Webb’s decision to hand Carroll his marching orders for clipping Swansea City’s Chico Flores with his arm in a Premier League clash at Upton Park.

McEveley will therefore serve his four-match suspension and the left-back sat out Town’s 3-2 victory at Port Vale on Saturday.

Cooper said: “It’s a waste of time. If Andy Carroll can’t win that then what chance have we got with Jay McEveley?

“We decided between us that there would be no point because if Andy Carroll can’t get that then we’ll have no chance of getting Jay.

“They’re going to stand by Howard Webb, he’s a World Cup referee.

“They’re not going to say he made a mistake so we had no chance of winning that.”

Goals from Nile Ranger, Alex Pritchard and Nathan Byrne helped Swindon turn a 2-0 half-time deficit into a memorable 3-2 victory at Port Vale and Cooper was pleased with the way his players adapted to high winds and heavy rain as well as a quagmire of a pitch at Vale Park.

“We are more suited to the nicer weather and the nicer pitches, but in a long season you have to grind it out even when it’s not so nice,” he said.

“It’s difficult to play in. The conditions at the end were atrocious.

“It’s not nice, you have to grind it out but it’s the same for both teams and we just had to get through it.”

Sensible outcome. The card was harsh but was never going be overturned.

The wound to Assombabilabong could be seen as self inflicted, ducking his head downwards to meet a rising boot. His subsequent substitution was to only positive thing to come out of the challenge. It wont happen again a week Monday and he may be the difference in our chances to get to Wembley.

Yep we all knew that, so common sense rom the Town bosses.

As o he game on Saturday now his is the Tow we love to watch. Over the last to games they have now proved they have b0ll0cks and passion. They were also quicker going forward which is what many of us have been pleading for.

The players and maybe the management do read these pages so maybe a little constructive critique here does pay dividends. If the players do read these forums and respond positively then it does show they really do care, and that is good.
More of the same please lads and we may get something from a season that had started to go backwards, well done and COYR's.

Agree with the sentiment but not sure how much the management or players listen to the comments on this site directly - hope they don't to be honest. But certain sentiments from supoprters have been reitterated by the adver and I'm sure they would be seen by the club. Whether that's a good or a bad thing, who knows.

The game is friday this week as the JPT game is on Monday.
A performance as we did saturday playing the style of football we played at Port Vale would be great. Colchester havent played for three weeks so hopefuly they are a bit rusty as its not the same training to playing. Would be great to have a superb performance at home with three points as well and have the likes of Walsall and Peterborough knowing they will need to get a win.
We all know this bunch of players have the talent maybe and hopefully that was our slump as all teams get them through the season. Orient have now lost their last two in the last minute of each game so maybe with them coming up soon it could be a good time to play them.
If we can put three or four wins together in our next games who knows what could happen.
