DAVE Ferris was delighted to see his Chippenham Park side keep their positive run going as they claimed the derby spoils at near neighbours Calne Town last weekend.

Two goals from top scorer Mark Robinson saw Park battle their way to all three points at Bremhill View.

Park boss Ferris was pleased with some of the football on display on a heavy surface but is warning his players not to get carried away by their recent good form.

“We defended very well and in the second half, I thought that we did exceptionally well at times,” he said.

“Having said that, we rode our luck a little bit – we haven’t had much luck at times this season but in the second half, they could have scored and the momentum could have changed if we’d conceded one.

“But at the same time, we probably should have had two or three more.

“We expected a tough game and Calne worked very, very hard. The conditions didn’t suit either side but the one thing I was pleased about is that we still kept to our beliefs of playing football.

“Some of the football that we played in difficult conditions was very good and we’ve got to keep our feet on the ground.

“We’ve won three, drawn one and lost one in the last five games – it’s a good three points and I’m pleased that we’ve kept up the momentum.”

Calne’s Glenn Armstrong brought a close-range save from Park keeper Charlie Heydon early on whilst at the other end, the hosts’ Stuart Windsor showed off a smart piece of control as he brought down a high ball before volleying narrowly wide.

Full-back Kieron Gleed tested Heydon with a long-range effort before the visitors won a penalty late in the first period.

Park broke on the counter-attack and Ajay Arithoppah’s cross kicked up off the turf, hitting the hand of covering defender Ben Trafford.

Calne keeper Jamie Bartlett superbly palmed away Robinson’s spot-kick but the ball bounced back to the striker, who fired the rebound into the top corner.

Phil Baker’s powerful drive stung the palms of Bartlett after the break and Ferris’ men increased their lead when Dan Price was challenged in the box following a quickly-taken short corner, with the loose ball rolling kindly for Robinson to instinctively slot home his second of the afternoon.

Calne’s Tom Boakes missed the chance to reduce the deficit as he blasted over from a good position in the box whilst up the other end, Arithoppah almost netted his side’s third as he smacked the bar with a clipped effort from outside the area.

The hosts’ Alex Hamilton drew a good save from Heydon with a powerfully struck effort late on but Park held firm.

Lilywhites chief Simon Gardner said: “I thought we deserved to get something out of the game. We caused them some problems but just didn’t seem to take our chances.

“We had a few players missing but that’s part and parcel of it. But not having a consistent side at this level doesn’t make it easy, as well as not being able to change it from the bench.

“If you can’t convert your chances, you get punished. We’re feeling the hurt at the moment but we’ve got to stick together and turn it around.”

Park are without a fixture this weekend whilst Gardner’s Calne go looking to bring their eight-match winless run to an end at Ashton & Backwell United.

Sarum success is a positive Development for Bassett boss Terry

WOOTTON Bassett Development manager Dave Terry was delighted to see his side get back to their best as they triumphed 4-1 at Sarum Youth Seniors last weekend.

In the only fixture of the weekend to be played in Division One of the Wiltshire League, Bassett brought their six-match winless run to an end in Wilton.

Shaun Terry put the visitors ahead with a scorching 35-yard effort before top-scorer Lewis Petrie filled his boots, hitting a first-half hat-trick to put his side 4-0 up at the break.

The hosts did pull a goal back but Terry was pleased to see his team back on the boil in their first outing for three weeks.

“We’ve been training hard over the last few weeks and the commitment from the lads last weekend was brilliant,” said Bassett chief Terry.

“I was a bit worried about the conditions before the match but the pitch was absolutely superb down there.

“We changed the system a little bit and brought in a few more experienced lads to help out the youngsters.

“Then in the second half, we had the chance to give a few of the 16 and 17-year-olds a run out from the bench because it was an awfully long way to travel for ten minutes of football.

“We’ve lost a few games in the last few weeks but we played really well and it was the best I’ve seen us in a while.”

Elsewhere, Devizes Town Reserves were in action in the Premier Division but were unable to halt title-chasing Shrewton United, who ran out 5-2 winners.
