SWINDON TOWN: Mason fitness in doubt for Oldham clash

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Town's Ryan Mason, left Town's Ryan Mason, left

RYAN Mason is not expected to be fit to face Oldham Athletic this weekend as he continues to recover from a side strain.

The on-loan Tottenham midfielder, who has been plagued by injuries this season, was forced off after 17 minutes of Swindon Town’s 3-1 victory over Shrewsbury last weekend after suffering a muscle spasm and did not feature in the squad which earned a point at Walsall on Tuesday night.

Manager Mark Cooper is not anticipating a miracle cure ahead of tomorrow’s clash at the County Ground, but there is better news on the fitness of Jay McEveley, who is close to a comeback following a knee problem.

“Mason will struggle for Saturday and Jay McEveley has got a good chance of being fit,” Cooper said.

Meanwhile, Troy Archibald-Henville, Tijane Reis and Alex Smith all stepped up their respective recoveries from knee surgery with gametime in a development XI match against Birmingham City on Wednesday.

“We managed to play. Troy, Tijane, Alex Smith all got valuable minutes,” said Cooper. “It was a worthwhile exercise for us and they are a step closer to being involved now.

“Maybe one more (game is needed) for Troy and Tijane but they’re very close now.”

Town lost the game 3-1, while Cooper’s son Charlie lined up against his dad’s side.

At a guess, i think Coops will set out with a more attacking formation than what he played at Walsall, so would say there will be 3 changes for the Oldham game. Jay to return in place of Reckord, Ryan Hartley for Louis Thompson and Barcham or Byrne to replace Pritchard. But could Coops be brave enough to play 3 up front and give a start to Barker. Have to wait and see, but plenty of options and we should have quite a strong bench.

Weather forecast is not good, more rain and wind, after last Saturday's first half monsoon, we should have learned what to expect. Another poor team that took points off us we need to avenge.

Keep Louis Thompson in the side. Our only hard tackling mid-fielder and streets better than Harley. And Play Smith and Ranger up front please. As soon he is fit, try Troy in place of Ward, who is well past his sell-by date and a major liability at this point.

Louis Thompson a far better player than Harley who was shocking against Shrewsbury. Thompson is stronger in the tackle, better at going forward and his all round play is superior to Harlet and to me he has been under used this season and i hope he gers another start tomorrow.

They keep saying another week or two for Troy surely he must be nearly there now and we need him and tomorrow would be a good game to get him back.

Has to be Ranger and Smith again up front and maybe Bryne in for Pritchard.
Lets hope the game is beeter to watch than the Shrewsbury game which has to be the worst performance of the season and it would be nice to see a few goals go in tomorrow and get the goal tally up.

LeGod, I don't see how you can make a comparison between Louis and Ryan, their skill sets are completely different. Louis is quicker and more defensive and Ryan is more stylish and adds more threat going forward.

It could be that both will start and Cooper won't bring in a direct replacement for Pritchard. If we were away, then no doubt Louis would be most likely to start, but as we are at home I think Coops will want to take the game to them and without Pritchard and Mason he may decide to bring in someone more suited to play wide rather than Louis, regardless who we start, we need an attacking midfield play maker who can take set plays and maybe even penalties. IMO Hartley fits the bill and will start, because he can fill that void. we haven't seen anywhere near enough of him this season mainly due to injuries, so just maybe this will be his chance to shine.

First game of the season without our three spurs loanees. A glimpse of next season perhaps? (Unless we are able to sign any of them permanently).

Speaking of a next season line-up; I'd like to see this team sheet tomorrow:

Wes
Nathan T, Troy, Branco, Nathan B
Kasim, Thompson, Luongo
Storey, Nile, Smith M

Subs: Barker, Reis, Smith A, Belford, Barcham,

I can't see Ward, McEveley and Harley in Cooper's long term plans and it seems Dany is seemingly already on his way out. Loanee's are great while they last but you cannot plan around them. Waldon, Jackson, Ferguson, Oakley, Agombar, Francis and Bedwell make for a superb support cast.

I don't know what anyone's worried about - the future's bright at SN1

old town robin - i know Harley hasnt played much this season but i havent seen anything when he has played on what he gives us apart from last week when he continously kept trying to set the Shresbury players up by constantly giving the ball straight to them.
Louis thonpson when he is given licence is very good at making direct runs from the midfield. To me Thompson is still a better all round player and is more adaptble.

The ban and injuries could be a good thing in a way as it really allows us to look at our actual squad as no Spurs boys will be involved tomorrow
.
As Luongo said the squad is looking healthier now - so we do have plenty of options and fully expect us to come out clear winners by a couple of goals
.
We can stick to the diamond and simply replace Pritchard with Harley or Barker in the hole - especially as Barker has siad thats his perferred positon!
.
We could go with a flat 442 and have Byrne come in for Pritchard on the left and Barthram on the right for L.Thompson
.
We could go 433 and have Byrne come in for Pritchard on the left and N'Guessan on the right for Ranger or Smith
.
Then we can look at the midfield trio and potentially put Harley or Barker in for L.Thompson if we want to go for it or leave it as it is if we want to be a bit more solid
.
Plus Cooper could always put Tijane and Troy in the squad be it on the bench or even start and that would give us even more options
.
I personally would go diamond with Harley coming in for Pritchard as it gives us the most continuity and allows us to really work on that formation if we are going to start apoting it away from home
.
I agree with OTR Harley and Thompson are totally different players so shouldn't be comapred - maybe in the diamond we will start to see the Harley of old which was one of the best attacking midfielders in L1
.
Also with 2 big men up top we should see lots of balls be laid of to him to really create something
.
Thompson can do the defensive work and then hopefully we can see how Luongo and Kasim operate in the box-to-box mode when we are controlling a game (like we normally do at home)

Not bothered, Louis is a class act in the tackle. Growing up as a centre half I love a good, strong challenge, we need that in our midfield. Hope he starts against Oldham.

Would also like that Smith-Ranger combo starting please :D
