10:18pm

That's all we've got time for this evening, ladies and gents. Thanks for stopping by tonight.

Town took a good point from a 1-1 draw at Walsall, having survived a torrent of Saddlers pressure. Next up is Oldham Athletic at the County Ground on Saturday.

We'll be back with all the best build-up to that match from 1.30pm right here, with in-play updates and reaction to follow.

Until then...goodnight.

10:18pm

Midfielder Louis Thompson is currently speaking to BBC Wiltshire.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Footballer Louis Thompson

LOUIS THOMPSON

“We dug in in the first half but that’s what you need to do at places like this," he said.

“We had our fair share of chances and it was great to get the goal so hopefully this can be a platform for us.

“At times we were a little bit open out wide but we got a bit more width when Barthram came on which helped us.

“We created chances which is pleasing and we’re happy with a point.

"We're still in touch with the play-offs so all-round it's a good day."

10:14pm

10:13pm

Town have managed to arrange a development game with Birmingham for tomorrow which will allow injury victims Tijane, Troy Archibald-Henville and Alex Smith to get some vital minutes in their legs.

10:03pm

Cooper confirmed there has not been in progress regarding Dany N'Guessan's potential loan move away from the County Ground, and that he now believes it is unlikely he will be adding to his squad.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Swindon Town boss Mark Cooper

MARK COOPER

“I’m not too confident we will do anything now before the window shuts. We have an extremely talented bunch of young men and we’re happy working with them.”

10:00pm

Town boss Mark Cooper has spoken to the media and was content, if not ecstatic, with a point.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Mark Cooper pictured yesterday

MARK COOPER

“I’m pleased we’ve come away and got something against a team who are going really well," he said. "We were expected to take a battering but we battled well and we’re pleased with a point.

"We can’t go away and play exactly like we do at home and you have to ride your luck a little, but we did that and we are pleased with a point. We came here to win but we’ve stopped the rot and we need to beat Oldham now.

“Our changes worked and we’ve done it a few times, like at Rotherham, and it’s worked again.

“Michael’s (Smith) got off to a good start and hopefully the fans are taking to him and he’s showing he can make a career out the game.”

9:54pm

Mark Cooper is on his way up to talk to the media.

9:52pm

9:42pm

89 minutes: Benning lets fry from wide on the Saddlers’ left but it flies by the angle of post and bar.

9:40pm

WALSALL SUBSTITUTION: Troy Hewitt on for Sawyers. 88

9:40pm

TOWN SUBSTITUTION: Ryan Harley on for Yaser Kasim. 88

9:39pm

87 minutes: Louis Thompson shoots from nearly 40 yards out and it’s straight at O’Donnell. Three added on.

9:36pm

WALSALL SUBSTITUTION: Ashley Hemmings on for Febian Brandy. 84

9:36pm

TOWN SUBSTITUTION: Miles Storey on for Nile Ranger.  84

Smith!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!! what a signing! 200k well spent!

9:24pm

72 minutes: Westcarr is free on the edge of the area but fires over the top.

9:24pm

SUBSTITUTION: Ben Purkiss on for James Chambers. 71

9:23pm

GOAL 1-1 (Smith 71): Thompson’s run into the box earns a corner and when Ward dinks it back into the box, Smith gets in front of his man and heads home.

9:18pm

67 minutes: Barthram cuts inside and shapes to shoot but his effort is incredibly tame and is very wide.

9:14pm

That change has seen Town go three at the back, with Thompson tucked in with Ward and Branco.

9:13pm

Pritchard spends a fair time clapping the Town fans. If you read into stuff like this then you could assume it meant he was off before the end of the transfer window. If you don't, like me, then he may have cold hands.

9:13pm

TOWN SUBSTITUTION: Pritchard trudges off and is replaced by Jack Barthram. 62

9:10pm

58 minutes: Foderingham gets down well to save from Brandy.

9:07pm

YELLOW CARD: Pritchard booked for a foul on Brandy. He’s in danger of being sent off for dissent before he eventually shuts up whinging about it. 56

9:04pm

53 minutes: Branco is lucky to get away with one there as a penalty isn’t given for a foul on Chambers. The Brazilian was trying to see the ball out but took the man instead of blocking him from the ball. I’d have given it.

8:59pm

Town not really able to bring the ball down and play at the start of this second half.

The Jockster says

Walsall deservedly in front as Town concede another sloppy goal. Pushing up on us and causing us to move backwards and sideways rather than forward. Been better last 5 but very little penetration in the last third an in the box.

8:37pm

HALF-TIME: Walsall 1 (Sawyers 36) Swindon Town 0

8:36pm

45+1 minutes: Foderingham does really well to turn Brandy's shot wide.

8:36pm

45 minutes: Ranger rises to meet Pritchard’s free kick but heads just wide.

One minute added on.

8:34pm

40 minutes: Kasim plays a beautiful ball for Smith who advances and finds Pritchard, but his attempts to shoot only lead to a corner which is eventually cleared.

8:32pm

Probably a fair reflection of the game so far, but Town are still in this.

8:29pm

GOAL 1-0 WALSALL (Sawyers 36) Westcarr slips Sawyers in and the midfielder does the rest as he finishes low past Foderingham.

8:27pm

35 minutes: Mantom swings a free kick into the area which Foderingham goes to claim before being wiped out by Butler. Referee Brown speaks to the Saddlers captain but there’s no booking.

8:23pm

30 minutes: Luongo brings the ball down really well but when he comes to shoot he’s off balance and fires wide.

8:21pm

28 minutes: Sawyers plays a lovely reversed pass to Westcarr but the striker can only fire over the top. Another warning sign.

8:16pm

24 minutes: A Town free kick, wide on their left, is swung into the box and Smith heads just wide. Inches.

8:14pm

21 minutes: Brandy is a threat again as he looks to be clean through on Foderingham, but Ward gets back well to tackle.

8:13pm

20 minutes: Luongo turns down the chance to slide Ranger in, in favour of shooting but his effort is over the bar.

8:12pm

19 minutes: Pritchard takes aim and fires a shot in from wide on the left but it’s relatively easy for the home keeper to gather.

8:10pm

Some big gaps in the Town defence and midfield which the hosts are taking advantage of.

8:07pm

14 minutes: Lalkovic swings a leg at a cross to the edge of the box but Nathan Thompson deflects it behind for a corner. Town can’t take advantage of the chance to break.

Flint own goal away at Brentford. Wonder if it was in the same goal he scored during the play off semi?

8:03pm

10 minutes: Luongo has Town’s first effort but it’s low, along the floor, and straight at O’Donnell.

8:02pm

Nine minutes: Another chance for the visitors as the pacey Lalkovic gets free down the left and chips a ball into the middle for Westcarr, which the striker heads over.

8:00pm

Eight minutes: The first big chance of the game goes to the hosts as Mantom’s little ball over for Brandy gives the in-form front man a sight of goal, which he lashes just wide. Foderingham looked worried.

7:56pm

Three minutes: Walsall win a corner which, as he has so often, Ranger rises to head clear. The ball comes back and Butler’s shot is deflected behind for another corner. This time Louis Thompson clears.

7:50pm

Here we go

7:49pm

Town kicking towards the goal housing their fans in the first half.

7:49pm

Turns out it was a minute's applause.

7:47pm

We have a minute's silence for Bert Williams.

7:46pm

Plenty of talk amongst the Town players as we await kick-off, most of it directed an new boys Jamie Reckord and Michael Smith.

7:44pm

Here come the teams! A few pairs of gloves around.

7:43pm

Updates are subject to a three-minute delay under the terms of these restrictions.

7:37pm

DANGER MEN - Andy Butler

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald:

ANDY BUTLER

The Saddlers skipper was earmarked for the Premier League during his time under Brian Laws at Scunthorpe, but things didn’t quite work out like that. He eventually moved to Huddersfield and once again looked to be moving upwards, but his career stalled and he moved to the Bescot.

Despite not living up to his potential, Butler is still a quality defender, and is capable of keeping the opposition strikers in his pocket.

7:34pm

Should be a decent night for Town if their shooting practise is anything to go by. It probably isn't, though.

7:33pm

MAN IN THE MIDDLE

Tonight's referee is Mark Brown and, given his habits, he'd be well advised to steer well clear of bulls in the area.

Brown has shown the red card as astonishing seven times in 19 games this season.

7:31pm

DANGER MEN - Craig Westcarr

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: York City's Chris Smith beats Spireites striker Craig Westcarr in the air

CRAIG WESTCARR

Town know all about this big, powerful forward after he scored Chesterfield's second goal in the JPT final in 2012. He can battle with the best physically and is also a threat in behind. One to be watched.

7:28pm

Jamie Reckord is wearing some very short shorts this evening. Simon Ferry-esque.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Jamie Reckord has joined Swindon Town on a 93-day loan dealThe Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Town's midfield maestro Simon Ferry

CUT FROM THE SAME CLOTH?

7:26pm

Dureing his pre-match press conference ahead of tonight's game, Swindon boss Mark Cooper addressed suggestions his side have had more than their fair share of luck this season.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Swindon Town boss Mark Cooper

MARK COOPER

“I’ve seen one or two things that we’re always lucky or we’ve had loads of luck. Certainly this season I can’t remember having too much luck so maybe we deserved a little bit on Saturday.

“I much preferred to be sat at home on Saturday night with three points than after the Wolves game with everybody telling me how good the team was but we got beat."

DANGER MEN - Febian Brandy

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald:

Despite not scoring an awful lot of goals at a number of clubs during his career, the attacker is probably as dangerous now as he has ever been. Brandy scored a hat trick at Notts County at the weekend and is no doubt in confident mood.

7:19pm

Earlier in the season, Walsall produced a fine counter-attacking performance to beat Swindon Town 3-1 at the County Ground.

A reminder follows, as if you really needed it...

BREAKING TEAM NEWS

WALSALL v Swindon Town: O’Donnell; J Chambers, Butler, Downing, Benning; A Chambers, Mantom, Sawyers, Brandy, Westcarr, Lalkovic.

Subs: Lewis, Purkiss, Featherstone, Hemmings, Baxendale, McQuilkin, Hewitt.

7:07pm

ADVER CHIEF SPORTS WRITER SAM MORSHEAD: "I'd expect that Town side to line up in a midfield diamond, with Louis  Thompson as the sitting midfielder, and Michael Smith and Nile Ranger paired in a two up top.

"That would give Alex Pritchard the licence to roam free, which is the role in which he excels. Strangely, it was exactly the team I would have picked pre-match given injuries to Jay McEveley and Ryan Mason. Not that that means much."

I put it down to our shocking away form this season, I guess you and Andy were in no rush to get to Walsall??

Well in the end we held on for a deserved point following an improved second half display. Too often though our build up was slow and ponderous without being able to penetrate in the final third. Smith again looked useful and took his goal well but it's this failure to get forward that puts the defence under pressure. We saw it again tonight with more scary moments for Wardy and Branco. We were exposed time and again down the left flank and Reckord looked uncomfortable but got forward a couple of times to put in a decent cross.Coops needs to address that for Saturday.
Well done to me and the other 421 travelling souls who at least can celebrate a point on the road for a change.

Well done Cooper for listening and it was said on BBC Wilts he covered every blade of grass. Great result and bet Charlton fans are cheesed off with giving away a potent goalscorer called Smith. Superb signing and his workrate alone is just what we have needed. Roll on Saturday and lets have a goal feast please.

Someone has hijacked my username and posted this as me because I wasn't going to post because I am happy and have nothing to complain about :-)

More seriously thank you for the report, I was interested in how Reckord played. Baptism of fire possibly and a bit more time working with the team required perhaps !

I think your comments about scary moments in a way sums up why I believe Ward (and Hall) have been unfairly, at times, been singled out.

Good point and respect for supporting Town tonight (just wish I could have been there too).

Good battling performance tonight. Walsall away is a home game for me being 10 minutes up the road.

Firstly Walsall were a good side and a point was a good result.

Secondly as many others present there will testify we had to face some very strange refereeing decisions. As Town fans we tend to have a go at the ref but this was just perculiar. My own favourite was when Reckord was pushed over - we are talking pushed right over and the ref gave a free kick to Walsall!! Staggering, absolutely staggering! The second was when a Walsall player played it through to an offside player who left it, so Branco just saw the ball out = corner!

I felt sorry for Reckord, he has been given a bit of grief but the fella was often up against two very good wide men as Walsall pushed forward.

Luongo and Kasim needed to get the hold of the ball more tonight and also drive forward more - perhaps this will come in time. Walsall were oftern overlapping on both flanks and we were reluctant to do that.

Ranger seemed quiet but Smith was everywhere and caused problems for them. He is tireless. Wardy still looks shakey but Branco is solid and I though he was the pickl of the back four tonight.

We did cause Walsall some problems at times, plenty to be positive about - they are a form side and we battled, kept with them and took our chance and on another day could have snuck it.

Well done lads and good away support as ever. Shame about the ref!!

No complaints from me tonight thought the whole team put in a shift. Walsall are a very good side and I haven't seen a harder working side for some time. They seemed to be first to every loose or second ball and played a fast breaking passing game, like us on our best day. At times we did look a little open in the middle and the midfielders weren't always as tight to their men as they could have been, but the ball was being played around at speed and the Walsall movement was excellent.

Agree with bearwoodred those 2 reffing decisions were baffling. The Pritchard booking looked very soft as well. On Pritchard I may be wrong but that looked like he was saying his goodbyes when he got subbed off.

Branco solid at the back and a much better showing from Reckford although still settling in, pleased for him.

Ranger was up for it and won 99% of his headers up front and made some excellent defensive headers too. Smith not so consistent as Ranger in the air but looks an excellent signing and a very good finish. Smith drifted out wide a fair bit but did well with the ball at his feet, could maybe have gambled a bit more off Rangers flick ons but that will come.

Louis worked hard defensively and Luongo made a few Ferry like runs, unfortunately no end product today. Both made a good few tackles which was nice to see.

Credit to Cooper on team selection, and he got the team motivated and came back from a goal down, a good day for him.

Looking forward to the next couple of days could be some ins and outs on the transfer front.

Not long back in and won't repeat good reports already given by Jockster, Bearwoodred and Wilsey......and I'll just stick to the positives.

Good team selection and substitutions from Coops. Having 2 big men up front really helps to relieve pressure and build attacks. Smith did get drawn wide, especially in the second half but I think that's because so many wingers don't play on the wing these days and nor do overlapping full backs, overlap. When Nathan Thompson ran at the defence from a wide position, we scored.

Smith and Nathan were our best players and both played with intelligence, skill and heart. Smith made some great runs off the the ball and he really impressed me. Nathan is back to form and what a great player he is.

Reckord and Branco got better as the game went on on and could form a very solid combo in our defence. Record improved considerably as the game progressed.

Wardy, Branco and Louis Thompson made some excellent blocks, interceptions and tackles. Nile held the ball up well on occasions and even managed a few chase backs.

Mass had one of his better away games and really tried to get forward and create. On a few occasions he was really effective in breaking up their play and setting us going forward. He was clearly up for it.

Barthram came on and did well trying to play as an out and out winger. Storey and Harley just weren't on long enough to make an impact.

Yasser played well in patches and added a bit of steel when required.

Oh, and Wes was Wes and hopefully should be getting his passport visa stamped for a summer trip to Brazil.

Great result, bit lucky but won with some good tactics from Coops, some tenacity from the players and continued great support from the Red Army.

Overall, Walsall should have won really. The fact they didn't speaks volumes for our approach.

Well done guys, a good day at the office. Glad I went. Seen 8 games now. 2 draws now.

Wilesy - Funny how we all see it differently - I thought they played us off the park 1st half and we were ripped apart down the flanks, Branco did ok but I'd hardly call it solid thought he wobbled on occasions. Our midfield is just not strong enough and Kasim struggled again while Luongo was better but still not at his best. Reckord did ok but we let their nippy Brandy have far too much space and as you say big gals at times in the middle. Agree we deserved a point in the end against a very useful side and that everyone put a shift in. I reckon you could say we won ugly on Saturday and drew ugly tonight. Hopefully we can continue the run against Oldham.

Well done to the travelling 400 odd on what was a filthy night-well done team for getting a point.Wards contribution to the goal was probably a relief to him after Saturdays abysmal performance.More importantly,Hall definitely not missed.Smith looks like a very good signing and maybe the confidence levels will improve-especially away from home.COYR
