SWINDON Town have this morning confirmed the signing of striker Michael Smith from Charlton.

The County Ground club have issued a statement confirming the striker has signed a two-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed fee, subject to FA approval.

As reported by the Advertiser this morning the fee is understood to be around £200,000, with £100,000 paid to Charlton up front and the remaining half of the headline figure payable in add-ons.

It is also thought Charlton will have a sell on clause as part of the deal relating to any profit Town make in the future on the 22-year-old.

A brief statement this morning read: "Town have signed Charlton striker Michael Smith for an undisclosed fee, subject to Football League and FA approval.

"The 22-year old has put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half year deal at SN1."

Why are you welcoming him to a postcode? I thought we played at the County Ground?

Two big men up front would be great, play the passing football when we're in a decent position but not right in front of our eighteen yard box, let's have the front two winning the long balls and laying it off to the likes of Pritchard to create some chances, and hopefully we can get some goals and avoid the kind of silly play at the back that's ended up with us conceding so many. Sounds simple on paper, let's see if it can work in practice.

For the same reason as the bbc sometimes say welcome to SW19 instead of wimbledon.

Well, I'm with Jock on this. I hate the County Ground being referred to as half a postcode.

You're entitled to think that Avo. I think "SN1" is pointless and pretentious nonsense. That's not a pop at 6degreessouth above. I just don't like the way it's crept in over the last few years.

Fortunately, it's the FA who need to give their approval not the FL, so will most likely be sorted within 10 days! ;-)

Sure I read on another post the interview Power gave said he'd be in the squad against Shrewsbury. You'd presume from this he means the matchday squad i.e. available for selection but who knows. Need to start playing two up front at home whatever happens, it would take some pressure off the defence if nothing else. Ultra defensive formations don't work for me, just invite pressure and make the job of defending harder.

Den I'm 100% with you on SN1. Ridiculous. We play at the County Ground or Mecca if you like!

Hearing very good reports on Smudger from two AFC season ticket holders I know. Eye for a goal, can hold it up and not to bad on deck. All caveated with League 2 but described as a huge loss for them so hopeful he's going to be positive for us with more to come.

When i started watching the Town i went to the County Ground, Wow the hairs on my arms, neck and legs used to stand up, i loved it.So started my love affair with Swindon Town and the County Ground, it is this reason i dont like seeing our club or our ground referred to as SN1 (i maybe a old romantic hopefully the wife wont realise), i`m not that bothered if other fans wish to but find it rather sad that the likes of the Adver need to do so.

10 goals in 25 appearances does not exactly make him a lethal striker-Darlington and wimbledon on the cv is also an underwhelming bit of news. However, lets give the bloke a chance and see if he can kick start us and his career.Meanwhile Ranger converts to a centre half and Hall goes back to where he came from.Totally inept and has had enough game time thanks very much.

This article is about the signing of an addition to the squad and half the posters start a debate of whether the home of STFC should be referred to as CG or SN1. Pathetic.,

if Lee Power were to get an offer to rename the stadium Disney land or whatever I would support it if it brought in much needed extra revenue to the club, but then again probably our wonderful council would object to that..

Welcome to STFC Mikey boy Charlton fans have mostly confirmed that this will be a decent signing with their views on the lad. Most seem very surprised he never got a chance at Charlton and AFC Wombles certainly wanted him back there. 10 clubs interested and one of them was the POX I did hear ha ha hope this is true.
