SWINDON Town were last night unable to confirm whether or not they had signed Charlton Athletic striker Michael Smith, despite reports suggesting the frontman had penned a contract in Wiltshire.

The Advertiser was yesterday made aware of interest in the six-foot, four-inch hitman but, when questioned by this paper, Town denied that an approach had been made for the 22-year-old. However, reports emerging at around 8.30pm last night claimed Smith had joined the Robins for a £200,000 fee.

Addicks boss Chris Powell told press after his side's 3-0 FA Cup win at Oxford last night that Smith was in talks with the Robins with the view to making the move.

The former Darlington man moved to The Valley in August 2011 but has struggled to break into Charlton manager Powell’s first team and he made just two appearances during his time in south east London.

He has spent spells out on loan at Accrington Stanley, Newport County, Colchester United and most recently AFC Wimbledon, where he scored 10 goals in 25 appearances over the first half of this season.

As the Adver went to press last night, Town had still yet to confirm that Smith had signed for the club.
