NATHAN Byrne has insisted that Swindon Town are not playing with fear away from home despite holding one of the worst records on the road in the whole of League One.

Town’s defeat at Gillingham on Saturday was their ninth away from the County Ground in the league this season and left the Robins five points off the play-offs in ninth place.

Byrne, however, stressed that there was no mental block preventing Swindon from getting the results they need on unfamiliar turf.

Byrne said at the post-match press conference: “Every game is the same for me.

“Teams set up when we’re at home to sit back because they know the football we play but away from home they’ve got their fans behind them, they’re comfortable in their ground so they’re a lot more aggressive.

“We’re just trying to find a way around the way teams play against us at home and away.

“We’re still trying to work that out but we’re a work in progress.

“The lads are a strong team, always together regardless of the score.

“There are a lot of leaders on the pitch, even if it’s not vocally, so that’s not a worry.

“It’s just about putting it all together and getting more goals on the road.”

Byrne suggested that Town always felt they were in with a shout of getting something from Saturday’s game, despite falling behind to Leon Legge’s header in the 18th minute.

“They’re not the results we wanted but there’s still a lot to build on,” he said.

“The lads are very disappointed because we felt at the start of the second half we had them on the ropes, they weren’t getting a lot of chances and getting near our goal.

“We were going for it more and more and when they scored the second it was a big task to get back from there.

“In the first half we were disappointed but in the second half we felt we were on top.

“Their first goal was a big header and we knew he was a big threat, Leon Legge.

“He’s incredible in the air so sometimes you’ve got to put it down to being a great finish.

“We’re really disappointed because we felt we had a strong half, even when we went one down.”
