RUGBY: Devizes 54 Cheltenham 17
3:00pm Tuesday 14th January 2014 in Sport
DEVIZES gained revenge for their early-season defeat in Gloucestershire as they grabbed a bonus-point success in their first outing of 2014.
The Saddlebacks started with real intent, outmuscling their visitors at nearly every scrum and were soon on the board.
Skipper Tom Collins burst through for his seventh try of the season, fly-half Rory Brown adding the conversion, but Cheltenham responded as wing Adam Dobie touched down, Ollie Young restoring parity with the extras.
After that though, the hosts were in command, a quick backs move allowing wing James Last to go over for his first try of the season, which Brown converted.
Brown’s fine running lines earned him the next score, which he also converted.
The lead grew larger as Devizes were awarded a penalty try by referee Adam Wookey after Cheltenham had repeatedly offended.
Brown added the two points, then scored his second and third tries of the afternoon, allowing Devizes to canter into a 38-7 lead at the break.
Cheltenham responded with a try from hooker John Bryant after the interval and injuries began to take their toll on the home side, Collins, Jake Richardson and Toby Randall all departing.
Scrum-half replacement Luke Rapson got the home scoring started again but they also lost Brown to a head injury, wing Ryan Webb moving to fly-half and 17-year-old Josh Lewis making his first-team debut.
A fine performance was concluded as Jorge Wadman, got in on the end of some good handling in the backs to touch down and Webb converted.
Cheltenham had the last say as Dobie bagging his second.
