SWINDON TOWN: No Ngoo update after talks

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Michael Ngoo is a loan target for Swindon Town Michael Ngoo is a loan target for Swindon Town

MARK Cooper was unable to provide any update on the potential loan signing of Liverpool striker Michael Ngoo when he spoke to the local press on Thursday.

The Advertiser understands Swindon Town chairman Lee Power spent Wednesday talking to the Premier League club regarding the possibility of Ngoo joining the Robins but no deal is expected to be concluded before the weekend.

When asked by the Advertiser whether he could confirm that Ngoo was a target, however, Cooper said: “I’ve not been told that we’re signing Michael Ngoo. I’ve not been made aware of any developments. We have a list and I believe that list remains the same.”

Ngoo was signed by Liverpool from Southend in 2009 and has scored five senior goals in 23 appearances spread over loan stints with Hearts and Yeovil, without turning out for his parent club.

The forward enjoyed a prolific spell in the Liverpool under 18 side during the 2010/11 season, where he finished with 15 goals.

Since then he has been selected as part of the England squad for the Under 20 World Cup in Columbia in 2011.

In January last year Ngoo was sent out on loan to Scottish Premier League outfit Hearts where he made 16 appearances, scoring five goals.

Last summer he was given the chance in the Championship by joining Yeovil on a season-long deal, but was sent back to Anfield just three months into his stay at Huish Park where he made seven appearances, five as a substitute but failed to score.

He is seen by Town as a potential replacement for Nile Ranger, who is expected to see his contract cancelled by mutual consent imminently.

Ranger’s representatives and the PFA were due to meet with Swindon officials on Thursday but the club provided no update on the results of those discussions by the time the Advertiser went to press.

Meanwhile, Cooper is not expecting a great number of new faces to arrive at the County Ground in January following the acquisition of George Barker from Brighton & Hove Albion.

“I don’t think there will be a glut or an influx of new players - I think it may be one, maximum of two,” he said.

“We’ve spoken about a striker and everyone knows we may be light of a striker and maybe another defender.

“But, like I said last week, after the emergence of Rafael Branco, that may not be so much of an issue right now.

“We’ve also got Troy (Archibald-Henville) nearing full fitness so he comes into the mix as well.”

So we have 3 defenders, 2 of which are well off the pace and don't even get me started on how good Troy is NOT. We need another centre back as top priority and the striker to take over ranger

You were right the first time, 3 suspect defenders, Nat Thompson is also off the pace, don't get me wrong I like him a lot and hope he improves, but for some reason he is just not the same this season as he showed last along side Flint. I suspect he is not 100% fit, but Coops will continue to play him, the other alternative is he doesn't have the same engine in him to do what he is being asked to get forward and back, thus leaving himself exposed like he did against Orient.. Just an opinion, but personally I would prefer if Nat concentrated on his defending. I do agree with you an additional centre defender even if it is short term is badly needed.

when the gaffer said we do not need to focus on defence as much now the new guy is in, I thought he was taking the p**s. has he not been watching how shocking they are. its not about having the numbers to fill the positions, its about filling the positions with players that will help us push for a playoff spot, which is not going to happen with this current defensive line

Graham, by Coops mentioning "bringing in the new guy" I assume he mean Rossi Branco, hardly new when he's been here 6 months. The fact he has only made 1 appearance in the league as a sub and 1 JPT appearance is surprising as the one time I saw him in the JPT i thought he played well after a nervous start. Hall has improved and rumour has it Spurs expect him to play every game when fit. If Branco is going to get a chance i would think it would be to replace Ward, who must be due for a well deserved rest having played so many games without a break.

Expect Darren Ferguson to play the same tactics tomorrow that got them the points at their place. direct straight down the middle, just hope we might have learnt from the mistakes on that occasion and the centre backs keep it tight.

yes agree with you on that for sure, Hall has improved somewhat in the last month, but still not greatly confident in him. Ward for sure needs a rest, he is very suspect to say the lease, off the pace and tends to lose the plot on the ball when pressured far to often. Hope to see Branco get a run out tomorrow so i can cast my judgement on him. Its obvious for anyone to see we need a stricker and a centre back, Micky Mouse could see that. hopefully a lot of homework has gone into tomorrows game

Anyone thought that we might have agreed to sign him but are waiting to get rid of Ranger before we announce it to avoid any unfair dismissal nonsense?

Graham8181 you're obviously entitled to your opinion on Troy and obviously he's been injured and he wasn't the best in the central midfield experiment. But first three games of last year he looked a class apart, time on the ball, read the game well, big strong headed well and good distribution. three clean sheets including Brighton in the League Cup. I always felt that him and Hall might be our best centre half combination this season. Nothing changed my view of that so far, with Hall's improvement.

I've only ever seen him twice and he was absolutely shocking, remember being nervous for him when he was just playing a simple pass. in his defence it was during a patch when paolo tried to adopt shocking hoof ball tactics and troy just kept hoofing it to their team every time. we are obviously desperate for him to be decent and just hope the games i saw him play are not something to base my judgement on

Jervis and one other signed a contract until end of the season with Pompey, hence the reason they were not interested in taking El Gabas
