Waldon set to get Swindon Town chance

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Swindon Town youngster Connor Waldon Swindon Town youngster Connor Waldon

CONNOR Waldon looks set to have a big part to play for Swindon Town in 2014, as manager Mark Cooper tries to make the most of his limited striking options.

Waldon has been recalled from his loan spell at Gloucester City and would have featured in Swindon Town’s clash with Crawley Town on New Year’s Day, had a waterlogged pitch not put paid to the chances of any action at the County Ground.

The teenage frontman has impressed in loan stints at both Gloucester and Frome Town this season and Cooper feels he has earned the right to be considered for selection in the Swindon first team.

“He certainly would have been involved (against Crawley). We’ve always felt that he’s had the potential,” said Cooper.

“He has played at Frome and did well there, he’s gone up another level to Gloucester and become a cult hero there. It’s funny how football is. All of a sudden you get an opportunity, we called him back and he would have been involved but he’ll get his chance before the end of the season.

“Miles (Storey) has tweaked his hamstring so we don’t know how he’s going to be - he did that at Bradford - and with us not having an abundance of strikers and Connor is going to be important to us.”

Meanwhile, Cooper is hoping Dany N’Guessan will quickly rediscover his scoring touch in front of goal as he becomes Town’s only experienced striker this month.

N’Guessan, who has recently recovered from a virus which had him laid low for more than a week, will be expected to lead the line for the Robins while they try to recruit a new number nine following the return of Nicky Ajose to Peterborough and Nile Ranger’s impending departure.

“If we can get him back to how he was before, when he was scoring goals, then he can be very dangerous,” said Cooper.

“He’s a strong boy so hopefully he’ll come back and this extra bit of rest will help make sure he’s completely over it - same as Ryan Harley, Yaser (Kasim), all the boys who have had it.

“We’ve got 10 days before the next game so plenty of things can happen before then.”

Ranger’s representatives will meet club officials next week to discuss the striker’s situation at the club - and Cooper remains immensely frustrated by the 22-year-old’s disciplinary issues.

“We’ve got a meeting next Tuesday where everyone’s available, his representatives, and we will decide what we’re going to do,” he said.

“I’d love Nile to be able to behave like a professional footballer. I feel so sorry for him with the way it’s gone. He’s got all the potential in the world.

“It’s a crying shame that he is the way he is. I don’t think he’ll ever change.”

Good news for you lot.
Lee Camp has signed 2.5 yr contract with the Cherries, so it doesn't look likely that Fods will be in Eddies plans anymore. Surely one for the future, but i think he will benefit from staying put, and gaining more experience with a possible push for play-offs.
By the way i wouldn't recommend Thomas, he is a wrong'n, has an inflated opinion of himself and totally not a team player. Funny enough, last year we were not big enough for him, strange how things change. Leave him well alone would be my advice. Pitman much better option

Couldn't agree with you more Steady... I can remember the grief you lot gave Thomas on his return from loan.

Thanks Eddie, its a relief Bournemouth wont be in for Fodds but there may well be other clubs who are interested? As for Thomas it seems he isnt interested in dropping down to league 1 so let him stay where he is warming your bench, according to our manager we have 3 other targets and we want someone who wants to play for us and is desperate for first team football! Happy 2014 to you Eddie 👍.

Still if he's good enough fair play and look forward to watching him.

Fair play. Bit of experience needed but no harm in having a young one ready. Let's hope one of Power's 4/5 on the list are available. MC stated that he wasn't bothered which one we got which is a tactic to tell clubs we are not desperate and if they don't accept our offer we will move on. Fact is though we are pretty desperate and I'd be surprised if there were 5 decent, proven number 9s that are available for 100k or less and willing to play League 1 and choose us over other clubs. There should always be a like for like replacement in the squad for each position. That is not possible with our budget maybe but the no.9 is so important to our play, and a makeshift won't do. The reality is that whoever comes in wont have the quality of Ranger, especially in terms of hold up and quick feet play. This means we will be at increased risk of counter attacks after losing possession, and Ranger is also a top defender from set pieces. If the Bournemouth lad was first choice, offer 20k extra and get him training now. Or get someone in fast. We should have prepared for this. Also. Why is a meeting required with Ranger's men? He's either in breach and can be sacked or not. We should be providing proper support for him as we look set to dis-own him as a few words from MC have not worked. He may be a wrong un but that's why he needs help.

Kayden Jackson will feature before the end of the season, has great feet and a scoring record to match. Only drawback, he's maybe a bit lightweight for a centre forward type.

To answer your questions - if Ranger is to be disciplined severely he needs to be represented at the hearing - thats the law. Secondly - the club clearly have planned for this eventuality in so far as lining up 3-4-replacements - but Ranger cannot just be dumped without pay without due process. I have no idea what Waldon can do for us - he wont be to Rangers level so I agree on that and I find it exciting that another locally nurtured player is on the threshold of first team action. Like Kasim, Gladwin, Storey, Thompson L, the development pathway and succession plan is really taking shape. This is down to Power but also recognise the part Jed McCrory had in the beginning.

There is a place for this type of spam.

Please could you place your advertisement somewhere more appropriate.

Not STFC page on the Swindon Advertiser!!

Simple issue for Wes Thomas take a pay cut and play football or sit on the bench and collect the dosh I know which one I'd be doing ha ha BUT I am 58 and blooming feel it. Got to go now as my new years resolution was to try and do one press up a week and have even encouraged the wife to get underneath but she declined.
Yeovil are in for Thomas so no way he will drop back to our level and here is a player who thinks he is above his station and I would advise Cooper to steer well clear..Hope we can do a deal for Paddy Madden if they sign Thomas a great player like Ajose who will run all day long and banged in the goals in league one last season for Yeovil.

Ranger has had many chances and if you went to Brentford he was woeful, slow and not interested. We the fans are spending our hard earned cash on his wages don't forget.

Yes he has been good in other games but enough is enough he shouldn't be treated any different to the other lads.

Get a new striker in that will train, have some brain cells and will put effort and commitment into STFC.

Hear hear Tel he was abysmal at Brentford totally disinterested. He has been given more chances than you'd find on a Monopoly board. Those who are still calling for him to be helped are deluded, the club have bent over backwards to make allowances for his circumstances but have repeatedly had that concern thrown back in their face by Ranger.
Those who say you can't do this to him etc. are probably talking out of their backsides- Newcastle terminated his contract and it's surely likely that any contract drawn up will have a get out clause if Ranger acted up like he did there - which he has, so please spare us the legal rhetoric. Lee Power didn't come up the Thames on a banana boat so I doubt that he will act outside the scope of employment law for goodness sake!

If it helps Ranger should now be subject to a formal process.

Completely off topic but can I recommend Harry Redknapp's autobiography - "Always Managing " Some great memory references for Town fans with honourable mentions - Shaun Taylor - John Moncur - Dudley Tyler - Michael Carrick - Glenn Hoddle - and of course Paolo - the account of Pdc not wanting to get on a plane to fly from Stansted to Bradford is absolutely hilarious. It's a right good read and I've not even finished it yet- grab a copy secondhand or reserve it from the library it's well worth a read.

You need to learn to read Jockster, I don't mean the letters but the sentences. Nobody on here is saying he can't be disciplined, just that he will need to have a representative present when the deed is done. Nothing irritates as much as those that seem to disregard the views of others silly because their brains are too small to understand the written word or the detail of uk eloyment law. If it helps Ranger should now be subject to a formal process.
Ciclo - I think it's you who needs to read - the article says that the hearing will include Ranger's representatives so it doesn't look like STFC are seeking to ride roughshod over employment law does it? So maybe it's you and your brain that is too small and fails to understand the written word perhaps? :-)
You really are a total tower Jockster, if you read my commentary you will see it was to respond to another responders question about why we can't just ditch him unceremoniously, yet again you are demonstrating what a nob Jockster you really are.

Dear Diclo I did read your commentary and if you'd have read the original article you'd have seen that Ranger's representatives had been invited to be present.
Secondly your presumption that STFC cannot just summarily dismiss him is flawed. I would think for a start he could be dismissed without compensation for gross misconduct for starters given his Lord Lucan antics.
Thirdly he has not been employed a year so is not entitled to what would effectively be redundancy pay and provided STFC have followed correct disciplinary procedures en route to said meeting Ranger's contract can be torn up with him being paid up to that date and then end of and goodbye.
On that basis Mr Obnoxious from Dorset methinks tis more likely that you are the bell end rather than moi !!

Ciclo - firstly I did read your commentary and to reiterate if you had read the original article you'd have discovered that Ranger's representatives gave been invited to said meeting.

Secondly you state he can't be summarily dismissed without compensation - yes he can if STFC have followed correct disciplinary procedures. And let's face it they've been ultra tolerant of his well documented misdemeanors.

Thirdly given that they have he has no chance of claiming unfair or constructive dismissal and is certainly not eligible for any sort of redundancy. All STFC have to do is pay him up to termination date and even that might be debate able given his antics to date.

In conclusion I won't lower myself to your personal insult level - I'm much better than you on that score!

Certainly wouldn't be any level of redundancy because the post still exists, we need more strikers. The only way Ranger will get any money is if a compromise agreement is agreed just to get this situation over with in a quicker way than perhaps a longer drawn out dismissal.

You formed an alliance and taken up the cudgels with Jockster then ? .... ..check the history of your posts, attacking others is ritual and by your own admission goes back somewhile, you just throw out personal abuse on anyone that doesn't succumb to your bluster ... ...self righteous?? do what ??? .... methinks that is a bit of an own goal on your part ...

The only persons I challenge are those who post utter factless heresay drivel .... if you count yourself in that group or feel guilty by association then that's entirely up to you.

Wes signed for Bournemouth yet ???

There we are, happy now I'm back ? (and to stay, may I add )

I was at Brentford and although Nile did'nt sprint around for an hour ( what striker does these days?) he was still the target , McCormack did'nt leave his 18 yard box until Ranger was taken off , then he terrorised us down the wing put in some great crosses and one that finally bagged them the winner . IMHO

Exactly the answer is in your comment.' He was taken off' because he wasn't interested, was lazy and ineffective. Plenty of forwards have ran their socks off for the town - Simon Cox for one, Miles Storey, yes Ranger is a target man and not a fast type of player but he held nothing up and didn't look interested at Brentford. Nile is costing us money enough is enough get rid too many chances and won't change its sad but the truth.
