SWIMMING: A golden finish to 2013 for Millward

STEPHANIE Millward has success in 2014 in her sights after ending the year with two gold medals at the British Gas Swim Wales winter open championships last weekend.

The Box Paralympic ace, who won five medals at this year’s IPC World Championships in Canada, was back at the Wales National Pool in Swansea and tasted victory in the women’s multi-class 50m freestyle and multi-class 100m backstroke.

Millward, who trains with the Aquae Sulis club in Bath, says that she is expecting to trial for a place at next year’s Commonwealth Games, in Glasgow, and feels that she’s close to being back to her best following the lengthy lay-off after her London 2012 heroics.

“I feel really fit again now and I feel like I’m not very far away from being at my best,” said the Wiltshire swim star.

“There wasn’t an awful lot of competition for me last weekend but it was still nice to win some medals and also to be back at Swansea because I used to train there – I got to see a few friends and that was really nice.

“I’ve got a new coach called John Dougall, so that’s quite exciting.

“I’ve only been with him for two weeks but he seems to listen to me when I make any suggestions, so hopefully that will work out.

“I’m feeling really good right now so I just can’t wait to get stuck in to 2014.

“I don’t think that they know if there’s going to be a European Championships next year so I think that I will try and go to the Comonwealth Games if I can.

“Qualification won’t be until March or April and it will be difficult there because we all have to swim in a category higher but it will be helpful just to use it as another big competition.”
