SWIMMING: Jazz’s Duel after a record show
11:00am Friday 20th December 2013 in Sport
WILTSHIRE swimmer Jazz Carlin will turn her attentions to a potential reunion with pool rival Katie Ledecky after a hugely-encouraging performance at the European Short Course Championships last weekend.
Despite returning home without a medal, Carlin, 23, claimed two Welsh records during her three events in Herning, Denmark, giving her an important boost ahead of her appearance at a third Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next summer.
The former Wootton Bassett School pupil is in the middle of a tough training block and is more accomplished in the longer pools, but turned in the performance of the second day at the European event.
Finishing just outside of the medals in fourth place, she nevertheless finished her morning heat swim with a Welsh record time of 8:16.91.
Carlin went on to finish sixth in the 400m freestyle final, clocking another new Welsh record time of 4:00.92 and also contested the 200m free.
The two-time Commonwealth Games medallist competes in Glasgow’s 2014 Tollcross pool this weekend (tomorrow and Saturday) as she joins a European Allstars team taking on the USA in the third Duel in the Pool event.
The competition sees some of the world’s best swimmers facing off over the 25m short course distance with Carlin poised to come up against Olympic 800m freestyle champion Ledecky, who also won four golds at this summer’s World Championships in Barcelona.
Carlin said: “I’ve done it (Duel) before and it’s a fun meeting to do with European swimmers coming together. Hopefully I can race well and just enjoy it.
“Even though it’s short course, it’s going to be in the Commonwealth pool, so it’s a good chance for us to get to know those facilities for next summer.’’
