PREDICTIONS LEAGUE: Swindon Town v Coventry City

We enter the festive season with a home game against Coventry City. But don’t under estimate them. If it wasn't for the 10 point deduction they had at the start of the season, they would be right in the thick of the play off places. Who’s to say they won’t gain promotion this term. That would be some feat.

Last season when the Sky Blues came to the County Ground, Town were 2 nil down at half time with a brace from striker Dave McGoldrick.

The half time team talk by PDC over, the boys came back out for the start of the second half. Within minutes they should have been 3 down when McGoldrick on a hat-trick, forced a good save from Foderingham only to see Fleck flash the rebound wide of the post. The game was played at a fairly quick tempo but we lacked the cutting edge that would get us back in the game.

Three quick substitutions were then made by Di Canio; Adam Rooney on 51 min, James Collins 59 min and Alan Navarro on 63 min. Collins quickly latched onto a deflected shot from Rooney and turned the ball into the net only to see the effort ruled out for off side. Minutes later saw a superb effort by Gary Roberts fly into the top corner to peg a goal back for Swindon.

Three minutes later saw Collins, who was jeered by the Coventry fans when he came on, connect with the ball after it was flicked on by Navarro. Collins whipped his shirt off in celebration and then ran towards the travelling fans then slit towards them in his knees, receiving a yellow card in the process. Swindon should have won it with chances abound, but just could not find the winning goal.

Definitely a game where tactical subs made a big difference.

The time before last season’s home league meeting, Swindon and Coventry were both in the Premiership. 5th February 1994, one of the few games we won that season saw Jan-Åge Fjørtoft get a hat-trick, two first half penalties meant we went into the break 2 up. Coventry pulled one back in the second half before Fjørtoft made it 3 with 11 minutes to to record only our fourth win of the season.

Incidentally, other current League One clubs in the Premiership with us that season were Sheffield United and Oldham Athletic, who were also relegated along with Town.
