El Gabas unclear on his Swindon Town future

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Swindon Town's Mohamed El Gabas Swindon Town's Mohamed El Gabas

MOHAMED El Gabas says he has no idea where his future lies as his Town contract edges closer to expiry, with his agent already looking at possible new clubs.

The 26-year-old moved to Swindon in the summer having spent the previous four seasons playing in Belgium, but has yet to make a league start with his short-term contract expiring at the end of this month.

El Gabas is keen to stay but is also keen to play more first team football, with his agent looking at possible alternatives, but admitted he has yet to hear what the Town management have planned for him.

“I still don’t know but I will speak to people maybe next week and see what is going on,” he said. “Anything is possible, I can stay, I can leave. We still have two weeks to go so anything can happen.

“For sure I would like to stay but in the same moment for sure I want to play football, so for me the most important things is to play. I am not a player who likes being on the bench, so it’s either going to be Swindon, somewhere else in England or outside England.

“My manager (agent) is speaking to other clubs in England and outside England and this is normal if your contract is ending because you have to be ready.”

El Gabas believes he has not been able to show his best form due to the fact he has made almost all of his Town appearances off the bench, but insisted manager Mark Cooper and coach Luke Williams know exactly what he’s capable of.

“When you are an attacker you always need time because you have to show yourself,” he said. “For sure they didn’t see the best of me because I don’t start one league and in the cup I did well, and you need games to show your best.

“I am confident enough that if I start more games I can show.”

tricky one this, from what little we've seen of him, he hasn't exactly impressed me. He has a good physic and pace, but he doesn't seem to read the game well and get himself into goal scoring positions.

My personal thoughts are that he's not good enough to earn a new contract, but it's Cooper and Williams that see him every day in training and that's all that counts. He could be one of those that when he's scores his first goal he could go on a run. With Ranger out of contention I believe he should either be told now to find a new club or given a start to see if he can make it, same goes for Branco. There has been enough poor individual performances from certain players recently to suggest they should be rested. Not sure if Coventry would be the right game to play them, but then again with Bradford and Brentford away to come all our December fixtures are going to be tough ones.

I think he will be good for us but has had little or no chance. It is hard to work him out when we have seen so little timewise.

Not fair for any STFC fan to judge him on the basis of 1 JPT game (where he did well) or a smattering of sub appearances.

Presumably he is well down the list of strikers so will move on, but if we are to persist with playing 4-6-0 they all may as well move on!
