LEE Power and Mark Cooper have identified a handful of ‘realistic’ transfer targets as they look to add to the Swindon Town squad in January.

Director of football Power and manager Cooper communicate regularly regarding potential incomings at the County Ground and after watching a host of games a list of targets has been drawn up.

The January transfer window opens in a little over two weeks and Cooper is hopeful Power, who took over ownership of the club from former chairman Jed McCrory last week, will allow him to add to his squad.

Cooper knows a certain type of player is required to fit into Town’s footballing philosophy, but also is well-aware that any incoming players must also make sense financially as the club looks to become self-sufficient.

“We’re looking at players although we are a bit different because we need a certain ilk or type of player,” he said.

“We are looking though and hopefully we can add to the squad in January, I’m sure Lee (Power, owner) will make sure that happens.

“We have targets and Lee and myself have sat down and been to watch games and there are one or two we have identified which we believe we have a realistic chance of getting. It’s hard to get them over the line now but we have to be patient and wait.

“All I know is that if we can afford players then we will go and get them and if we can’t then we will stick with what we’ve got, because there is no point bringing them in if they’re not better than what we’ve got.

“We have a football club which is going to be self-sufficient in the summer and we are all heading in the right direction, so we should be positive.”

While Cooper is keen to add to his squad he knows there is a chance he may lose players, but the Town boss is not going to moan if players do depart.

“Nicky Ajose’s loan is up as well as Mohamed El Gabas’ contract so we have one or two we may lose and we would need to look to replace them,” he said.

“They’ve both done great since they’ve been here but you have to cut your cloth accordingly.

“I don’t really get too high or low about it because it’s one of those things you have to deal with as a manager. It’s no good moaning because I know the situation and the most important thing is the football club.”

Town travel to Sheffield United today and, as reported by the Advertiser yesterday, Nile Ranger is unlikely to be involved due to continued concerns about the striker’s behaviour.
