Ajose has now scored in every round of the JPT this season and talked the media through his goal this evening.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Nicky Ajose celebrates his late winner

NICKY AJOSE

"I thought I could direct it towards goal and fortunately it went in," he said.

"I ended up in that position, stuck my leg out and it went in."

10:49pm

Nicky Ajose has just described the referee's decision not to award a penalty in the first five minutes as the worst decision he has seen during his career.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Swindon Town goalscorer Nick Ajose celebrates his goal

NICKY AJOSE

10:40pm

It seems it will be decided tomorrow whether Swindon or Peterborough will be at home first in the final. Which would suit Town most?

10:34pm

The wait doesn't seem to be coming to an end I'm afraid. The lights may well end up being turned off before either Belford or Ajose emerge.

10:27pm

Still waiting for a couple more Town players.

10:17pm

Cooper also spoke about the the chance the Town squad now have to get to Wembley.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Mark Cooper salutes the away fans at Colchester

MARK COOPER

"This a great chance for us to get to Wembley, I didn't do it as a player, I got nowhere near, but it's something to savour.

"We have a young team and it would be great if we get there because it's something they will remember for the rest of their lives."

10:14pm

Manager Mark Cooper is speaking to the media and revealed his players did not do any extra penalty work ahead of this evening.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Mark Cooper

MARK COOPER

"We didn't practise penalties because it's impossible to replicate the atmosphere and I picked five player and told them to put their foot through the ball.

"There were some great saves from Ty (Belford) and we knew which way Morais would go because he has gone there with his last two."

10:09pm

Ben Gladwin, who made his Swindon debut this evening, has been out to speak to the media.

He said: "I was really pleased to get somne minutes and a feel of what it's like. I really enjoyed it, it was good.

"You get a little bit more time in your half on the ball, which you're not used to in non-league. I'm looking forward to getting as few more minutes.

"Ty made some great saves in the shootout. We're just plesased we got through that round.

"I think my mum and dad were here tonight so it was nice for them to see me get on the pitch."

10:04pm

Still waiting for Town boss Mark Cooper to come and talk to us. For some reason we are doing interviews outside this evening. It's freezing cold.

9:27pm

ATTENDANCE: 3,804 (79 Stevenage fans)

9:27pm

78 minutes: N’Guessan cuts inside and shoots wildly, with his effort only just sneaking out for a goal kick rather than a throw.

9:26pm

77 minutes: Another stinking decision from the referee as he fails to give a penalty for Kasim’s foul on Zoko. Blatant.

9:24pm

76 minutes: Another big chance for the visitors arrives when Akins ghosts between the Town defence to get a shot off, but Belford sticks out a strong arm to palm it away.

9:21pm

Gladwin looking pretty decent so far, really comfortable on the ball, has a trick or two, and willing to do his bit at the back. Very promising!

9:20pm

SUBSTITUTION: Peter Hartley off and replaced by Bruno Andrade. 72

9:19pm

72 minutes: Superb skill from Pritchard allows him to cut inside and curl a shot just wide of the post. Would have been great to see the net bulge.

9:16pm

Really interesting to see how ex-Marlow player Gladwin gets on. Always great to see former non-league players get their chance.

9:15pm

DOUBLE SUBSTITUTION: Luongo and Mason off and replaced by Gladwin and Kasim. 67

9:14pm

66 minutes: Ajose turns sharply and shoots on the turn, forcing Day to fall to his right and save. Decent effort, decent stop.

9:12pm

65 minutes: Quick feet from Pritchard sees him scoot inside and rocket a shot off the Stevenage crossbar. Great effort from the winger.

9:10pm

62 minutes: Heslop’s shot is blocked by Mason.

9:01pm

Town have not quite been able to slip back into their groove so far at the start of the second period, with the visitors coming into the game a little more without really troubling Belford.

8:57pm

49 minutes: Parrett gets away from McEveley and whips a ball into the box which Morais meets, but Bedwell is alert to block.

Clearly, your comment "could easily be four or five by the end of the night..." means we won't score again!!

I apologise in advance.

8:49pm

Here come the two teams. No changes for Town by the looks of it.

8:48pm

Former chairman Jed McCrory is clearly still taking an interest.

8:43pm

At half-time in the other Southern Area semi it's Newport 0 Peterborough 1.

I really fancy another trip to Peterborough.

8:35pm

This is all very comfortable for Town, though, and a second goal would seal it.

8:35pm

A load of Town players go straight to Mr Martin to discuss why the foul on Ajose was not given after only four minutes.

8:31pm

Two minutes to be added on.

8:30pm

40 minutes: Freeman weaves his way through the Town defence, including a ninja style lunge from Ward, but Hall stretches to clear his cutback. Doughty then hits a tame effort right at Belford.

8:28pm

39 minutes: Filipe Morais drives the ball wide to the right of the goal. That’s about all the visitors have offered.

8:26pm

YELLOW CARD: N’Guessan throws himself to the floor inside the penalty area and is rightfully booked for diving. 37

8:24pm

35 minutes: Another blunder from the referee as he fails to give the visitors a corner after the ball skims off the head of Harley.

8:21pm

33 minutes: N’Guessan drags a shot well wide of the post after Town work the ball forward methodically, starting from the feet of keeper Belford.

8:15pm

Town thoroughly deserve their lead having moved the ball around superbly, with Stevenage not up to an awful lot. Could easily be four or five by the end of the night.

8:12pm

GOAL 1-0 TOWN (Ajose 23) Town play another corner short to Harley who takes his time, sets himself, and drills the ball along the floor from 25 yards for Ajose to divert in off the post. Looked as if that might have been a move from the training ground.

8:09pm

20 minutes: Luongo wins a corner and then from Pritchard’s short kick receives the ball and fires off a shot which is blocked by Ben Chorley.

8:04pm

8:01pm

I think Mr Martin may be handing out quite a few free kicks to Town this evening to make up for his earlier error.

7:59pm

10 minutes: McEveley plays a free kick across the box for Mason who fires a low shot which Chris Day gathers relatively comfortably.

7:54pm

Ajose was pushed so hard he broke the goal, and the net and it had to be repaired.

7:54pm

Four minutes: Town work the corner into the box and Ward thunders a header off the bar. The ball comes down and bounces up again on the line, Ajose goes to head it home but is blatantly barged in the back and it has to be a Town penalty. The referee says no and that's an awful decision.

7:53pm

Four minutes: Ryan Mason is presented with a similar opportunity but his shot is cleared off the line by Jimmy Smith. Was probably going wide too.

7:52pm

Three minutes: A golden chance for Stevenage goes begging as Michael Doughty arrives late in the box, unmarked, but side-foots his shot well over the bar. A bit wide too. Rubbish.

7:49pm

One minute: Town win an early free kick after McEveley is fouled but the ball into the box comes to nothing.

Lot's of you are slightly concerned about the absence of Nile Ranger tonight. Don't be. Cooper would have found it tough to leave out any of his top three on current form and only five subs can be named. It's a calculated team selection.

7:24pm

Nicky Ajose thinks Swindon Town’s long break from competitive action could well be “a blessing in disguise”.

Town have not played since November 29, but Ajose said: “We’ve got five games in 21 days coming up so to have a break now is probably a blessing in disguise.

MAN IN THE MIDDLE

Stephen Martin takes charge of affairs this evening and going on his record this season you’d do well to get him to pull out his notebook.

It took seven matches for Martin to dish out his first yellow card of the current campaign and he’s only produced 27 since in a total of 18 matches. He’s not sent a single soul off, either.

A very patient man, you’d think, and there’s another good omen for Town with his presence.

Martin has only visited the County Ground on official business once before - and on that occasion James Collins scored four second-half goals to secure a 5-0 victory over Portsmouth. Same again please.

LAST TIME OUT

It was only back in August that Stevenage last visited Wiltshire - Town’s first home league game of the current campaign.

Massimo Luongo won the tie with a crunching strike from 25 yards after a stunning, sweeping passing move by Town.

MASSIMO LUONGO CELEBRATES SCORING AGAINST STEVENAGE

Let’s hope that can be replicated again this evening.

6:58pm

Swindon Town’s players recently tried out the Paint Pot Challenge, in association with competition sponsor Johnstone’s Paint.

The basic premise of the challenge is to land a football in a giant, inflatable paint pot, which would normally be fairly simple but Swindon decided to have a go in the middle of Liddington’s latest hurricane.

This is what happened...

6:57pm

We were told earlier that FIVE Stevenage fans pre-ordered tickets for this match. Stewards have been told to expect a crowd of circa 4,000 in the County Ground this evening.

6:55pm

It’s a little too early to be thinking about a trip to Wembley, according to Nicky Ajose, who’s concentrating purely on tonight’s clash with Stevenage.

Swindon Town would need to see off Boro and then beat either Newport or Peterborough over two legs to reach the final of the JPT and book a place at the Home of Football - and Ajose said: “Stevenage is going to be a really tough game and then there’s still another couple of games if we do manage to get through this semi-final, so I don’t think it’s taking anyone’s thoughts.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Nicky Ajose celebrates his late winner

NICKY AJOSE

“You’d be lying if you said it wasn’t a great opportunity but you’ve got to look at what’s right in front of you and that’s Stevenage.”

6:53pm

IN THE DUGOUT

Graham Westley is well know across the Football League as one of the bigger characters of the game.

From 2am texts letting his players know they'd been dropped to confrontations with fans, Westley doesn't do things by halves.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Stevenage Borough manager Graham Westley.

GRAHAM WESTLEY

As a manager he's been widely succesful, winning the Conference title and the FA Trophy in his first spell with Stevenage, as well as guiding Boro to the League One play-offs in 2010/11.

He may be unconventional, he may rustle a few feathers, but by and large his style has rubbed off on his players wherever he's been.

6:51pm

ADVER CHIEF SPORTS WRITER SAM MORSHEAD: “It seems like an eternity since I last saw Swindon in action - having missed the win over Carlisle to pop up to Manchester for the Rugby League World Cup final.

“By all accounts, I missed an excellent performance that day from Town and I’d expect something similar this evening after a long and refreshing break from competitive action.

“Nicky Ajose told the media this week that playing Graham Westley sides has been like walking in “The Land of the Giants” in the past, but this Boro team has a little more to it.

“Swindon should have more than enough to see them into the area final but make no mistake, they’re going to have to work for it.”

TEAM NEWS

Nothing official is expected until around 6.45pm, but here’s a quick rundown of Swindon Town’s casualty and absentee list as present.

Nathan Byrne is somehow still suspended following his ridiculous dismissal during the goalless draw with Crawley at the end of November, and sits out the second game of his two-match ban.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Nathan Byrne

NATHAN BYRNE IS SUSPENDED

Apart from Byrne, the only other players missing for the Robins are the injured trio of Alex Smith, Tijane Reis and Troy Archibald-Henville are out.

But there’s even good news on that front, with Mark Cooper expecting the three back in action early in the new year.

6:37pm

Buckle up, and enjoy, it’s going to be fun.

6:37pm

It’s been almost two weeks since Town were in competitive action - the 3-1 victory over Carlisle - and tonight is eagerly awaited for those starved of football for the best part of a fortnight.

6:36pm

A place in the rather long-winded Johnstone’s Paint Trophy southern section area final is up for grabs, with Stevenage the visitors to the County Ground.

6:32pm

The festive feeling is starting to take control, with the town centre lit up and Christmas music finding its way into just about every shop in the region, and Town will be hoping to give their fans a little extra seasonal cheer this evening.

6:31pm

Good evening everyone and welcome back to the County Ground for some JPT action on a chilly night in Swindon.

Wizard, I understand you aren't able to get to too many games through your ill health, but if you had been in attendance and seen them play, you would know both these two players are decent and will be important in our future should Wes and Nat depart in the new year

Sam, I really hope the players don't think it's a stroll in the park to seal the win as you seem to think it is, with only one goal in it, anything can happen to change the game, bad ref decision, injury, man sent off add a little bad luck and we would be up against it.

Seen it happen too often with commentators on the TV that speak too soon, better to have a little bit of humility than think it's all over, before that final whistle. Hope you're right of course but going on your predictions for charity you don't exactly have a good record do you. Lol.

Interesting subs decision, timing around 65 minutes is good, I expected Gladwin to get his chance, if tactical, Yaser coming on, suggest we want to shut up shop, although with only El Gabas as our only available striker on the bench options are limited, but would not be surprised to see him introduced before the end.

If we are serious about progressing why are we starting Belford and Barthram. Are Fodders and NT injured ?

No, but there has to be a breeding ground for players who've shown they're good enough to step up, surely?

Yes, I would agree in principle with that, but would add, bringing them on for 15 minutes at the tail end of a game and building that up to playing a half and then introducing them at the start, rather than chucking them in at the deep end in a cup game where anything goes. That is if we are serious about progrestion as opposed to seeing how they fair and identifying there weak spots for improvement ahead of the January window, when possible sales of others may see them thrust into the lime light. I'm only comparing methods, not faulting the one applied this evening, where it seems both have done ok ish.

Would be ironic, especially if the Town also make the L1 Play-offs because that would make Cooper the most successful Town manager for some considerable time.

Not bad for a clueless manager scraping by on a pittance. :)

got to get past Peterborough first and whilst Stevenage weren't very good i didn't think we were much better.

Belford's shot stopping is very good, great presence but very hesitant in his distribution i thought which allowed their players to get back into position. I must say when Luongo and Mason went off i thought "oh dear' (how big were Gladwin's shorts by the way?!?) but well played lads, a well dug out result.

Wiz,

Agree in principle but also happy to see Belford have his chance and hope now that he plays in both area finals matches as he has seemly won it for us tonight. Nathan has been injured and with league, IMO, being more important Barthram deserves his chance.

This result tonight does offer a decent pay day which is not to be sneezed at. Belford in goal IMO but the rest will depend on who is here, hopefully Ajose as it seems to be his comp, will he be able to play though unless signed permanently.

Yes, Cooper knowing better than us both as he sees him in training and has a far better perspective. Having Fodders on the bench will do no harm and may even inspire him a bit.
I don't think Peterborough are going to be easy and truth be known we should have dispatched Stevenage tonight without going to penalties, or so we would all like to think. Cup football is amazing as we should know, and always beware the under dog, as they can bite where it hurts.
Having an element now of flexiblity is good to know, but it seems we are as ever, even from before the days of Danny Wilson, wasteful in front of goal. Seems its an age old tradition, with the exception of Simon Cox and of course Austin. We are due another, lets hope he comes along soon.

Town goal scoring legend required, any takers, Den, Jock, OTR, Oxon, dazza, clean yer boots up, and get joggin' , only jokin, LOL.

I'm only comparing methods, not faulting the one applied this evening, where it seems both have done ok ish.[/p][/quote]Wiz, Agree in principle but also happy to see Belford have his chance and hope now that he plays in both area finals matches as he has seemly won it for us tonight. Strange match, we blew hot and cold. Ajose ran his socks off. Bartham looked good all night, stronger than Nathan has looked recently. Belford looked useful in goal though obviously under orders to pass or throw out, his kicking when he resorted to it was patchy but he looks like a good understudy to Wes and great saves in the shoot out. Mass had the poorest game I have seen him play in a Town shirt - he's usually one of my favourite players. Harley was out of sorts and so was Mason. When Kasim came on he looked slow and off the pace, jury out on Gladwin for me. The midfield went missing in the last 15 minutes, very strange match tactically.

We look very good at times and very poor at others; great inconsistency. I hate to say it but there doesn't seem to be a lot of fire and passion in the side. Perhaps it is the strict discipline of pass, pass, pass even if it is sideways or backwards. At least we're through but we will need to show much more nous to beat Posh.

Or like me, wasn't there last night, won't be at the area final or Wembley if they make it in the " it doesn't matter cup", but I will be at Sheffield on Saturday because that does matter :)
