ON THE day England find out who they’ll be playing in the group stages of next summer’s World Cup, Swindon Town manager Mark Cooper has laid into FIFA’s choice of hosts.

Cooper, whose dad Terry represented his country at the World Cup in 1970, feels basing the event in countries such as Brazil and Qatar gives some nations an unfair advantage.

And with Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions side potentially facing a trip to Manaus in the hot and humid Amazon rainforest, depending on the outcome of the draw, the Robins boss has stressed how much he disagrees with where the competition is being staged over the coming years.

He told the Advertiser: “You go to Brazil and half the stadiums aren’t ready and they’ve missed the deadlines but that’s alright. What the point in having a deadline?

“If that was England they’d take the World Cup off us.

“They’ve not decided to have a World Cup a few years down the line that you might as well play in a sauna.

“Guaranteed someone will have a heart attack and die, but it won’t be FIFA’s fault. It’ll be a lack of preparation or ‘they didn’t acclimatise well enough’.

“Let’s have it right, what are they trying to do? Why have a World Cup in a country that’s 250 degrees.

“If England get based (in Manaus) or up at the top, where the rainforest is and the heat is ridiculous, straight away we’re at a disadvantage.

“We could play Uruguay, Columbia, Brazil - who are all used to that - so straight away we’re at a disadvatnage.

“If it’s a World Cup everyone should be equal.”
