RUGBY: Heathcote wary of the home threat

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Tom Heathcote Tom Heathcote

TOM Heathcote will draw on memories of last season’s Amlin Challenge Cup double-header against Italian opposition as he gears himself up for a fired-up home side tomorrow.

Bath play the first leg of back-to-back games against Mogliano in Italy and while the minnows are point-less after the opening two rounds, the Scotland fly-half is expecting nothing less than a hot reception.

The 21- year-old kicked 17 points in Bath’s 67-11 home win over Calvisano during the pool stages of last season’s competition , but the avalanche of second-half points disguised a ferocious first half in which Bath were behind before leading 15-8.

“With the first match away from home, we don’t know what to expect,’’ said Heathcote.

“We have to prepare well and make sure that anything unexpected doesn’t deter us.

“It’s the same as when we played Calvisano last year. When we played them at the Rec, the first half was really tight before we got it together in the second half.

“We’ve got to go there knowing that for them (Mogliano), at home as well, it’s going to be a cup final and they are going to want to go really hard at us.

“We’re going to have to be ready to match that physically and mentally and do a professional job.’’
