TOOLSTATION LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION: Chippenham Park 1 Barnstaple Town 2
9:35am Monday 28th October 2013 in Sport
GOALS from Lee Francis and Billy Tucker proved to be enough for Barnstaple Town as they defeated Chippenham Park 2-1 at Hardenhuish Park, writes Andrew Lawton.
Mark Robinson scored his fifth goal of the season for Chippenham as they secured a late consolation effort but it wasn’t enough to prevent the home side slipping to their ninth league defeat of the season.
Coach Tim Smith took charge of Park, with manager Dave Ferris absent, and his team got off to the worst possible start as Tucker opened the scoring with just five minutes gone.
Tucker’s eleventh of the season was poked beneath Park goalkeeper Martin Mitchell as he latched on to a neat through ball.
Chippenham could have levelled on the 20-minute mark but a free header for Robinson failed to challenge the keeper, and for the remainder of the first half, Chippenham were restricted to set-piece and long range efforts.
Barnstaple could have doubled their lead before the break but Tom Marsh’s goal was ruled to be offside by the assistant referee.
In the second half, Ajay Arithoppah hit Chippenham’s best chance of the game over the bar and it was a miss that proved costly as just ten minutes later, Francis drilled Barnstaple’s second goal across Mitchell to all but secure the three points.
Robinson did manage a late consolation for the home side as he latched onto a chip over the Barnstaple back four and coolly slid the ball into the back of the net.
Park coach Smith believed his side could have stolen a point.
He said: “I think a draw would have been a fair result for us, I mean if we’d scored with five or ten minutes to go, I think we might have gone on to get another.”
Chippenham travel to Radstock Town in the first round of the Les Phillips Cup on Tuesday night.
