SWINDON TOWN: Managers must be 'so careful'
THE countrywide debate over Roy Hodgson’s ill-timed joke proves how careful football managers must be in the modern game.
That is the view of Swindon Town boss Mark Cooper, who was speaking after a major national newspaper ran a story on the front page of their Thursday edition claiming the England manager had caused offence to at least one of his players by using the punchline “feed the monkey” in reference to winger Andros Townsend.
The remark, a reference to a well-known quip about the first manned space flight, was seized upon overnight and enlarged into a national issue.
Cooper stressed that the whole affair simply shows how delicate high-profile sportsmen and women have to be with their choice of words.
He told the Advertiser: “I’d never heard the joke until I read the paper this morning.
“How it’s got out of the changing room I don’t know but it just shows you have to be so careful what you say.
“You have to be very careful how it’s interpreted. You have to be so careful what you say now as a coach or a manager and it’s probably not the right thing to say.
“As a coach now you have to make sure what you’re saying is the right thing.”
