SAILING: Farrow plotting his international course
SAILOR Andrew Farrow is planning to fly the flag for Wiltshire at major international competitions in the coming years.
The 48-year-old, from Devizes, made his first appearance at the Inter- national 2.4 Metre Class World Championships in Poole last month. He hopes he can emulate just a portion of the success of his grandfather Major General Ralph Farrant, who competed at the Helsinki Olympics of 1952 and was chairman of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
Farrow, who has been wheelchair bound since being paralysed from the chest down after falling from a tree in 2006, is targeting more world championship appearances and says he’s relishing competing among able-bodied sailors.
“I’ve never really been one of those people who’s interested in competing in sports that were just for people with a disability, but when I’m in the boat, nobody knows that I’m disabled,” said Farrow.
“I can’t think of many other sports where able-bodied people and disabled people, who are both young and old, compete in exactly the same way – I love it.
“After doing the world championships this year, I started thinking about going to more.
“There were a few kids who where there to see Helena Lucas (London 2012 gold medallist) but came up after the races to say well done to me, which was really nice.
“My grandfather was a really talented sailor so I guess that it’s in my blood. The 2015 world championships are due to be in Helsinki and how great would it be if I could compete on the same water that he did, more than 50 years later?”
A grant from the Salisbury-based Southern Spinal Injuries Trust enabled Farrow to buy his own 2.4m boat and enter this month’s world championships.
The 2.4m class involves one-man racing yachts that are ergonomically designed for handicapped sailors.
