RUGBY: Bath United downed by Braves
10:49am Tuesday 1st October 2013 in Sport
BATH United slipped to their first Aviva A League defeat of the season as they lost a 32-27 thriller at the Rec against Exeter Braves last night.
The home side made a good start as Tom Biggs crossed on four minutes, but Exeter fly-half and captain Ceri Sweeney booted the first of two first-half penalties and then converted a try by wing Fetu'u Vainikolo, who ran from inside his own half.
United newcomer Saeed Agboke touched down on the wing after good handling by Gavin Henson and Ben Williams as Bath trailed 13-10 at the break.
A penalty from Tom Heathcote briefly drew Bath level, but Braves number eight Kai Horstmann charged over 12 minutes after the interval, Sweeney converting before two more Heathcote penalties got the hosts to within a point.
Agboke pounced for his second try to take Bath into the lead 24-20, but with five minutes remaining, Vainikolo scored again and Sweeney converted.
Heathcote tied the scores with another shot at goal, but Horstmann's second try as time ran out ended Bath's unbeaten start to the season.
