SWINDON TOWN: Cooper tips Hall to keep Davies quiet
MARK Cooper has told Grant Hall to take a gumshield with him to Preston this weekend as he prepares to deal with the threat of Kevin Davies.
After standing up well to the pace and trickery of Fernando Torres and Demba Ba on Tuesday night, Hall will have an altogether different kind of striker to mark at Deepdale, with Davies notorious for using his strength and weight against defenders across a career spanning almost 20 years and over 700 professional appearances.
Now leading the line for Preston, Davies is not about to change his style of game as he enters the twilight of his career and Swindon Town manager Cooper has urged his young centre-back to protect himself accordingly.
“I’m sure Torres and Demba Ba tried to get close to him and if he can deal with Torres and Demba Ba like he did the other night he’ll find Saturday no problem,” said the Robins boss.
“Kevin Davies is a big, physical threat, he’s had a great career and Grant just needs to take a gumshield and that will do him.
“Everyone knows what you’re going to get with Kevin. It’s a physical battle and if you don’t stand up to it he’s going to trample all over you.
“We have a different way of playing and that’s not to get too involved with the physical side of it and try to get hold of the football.
“That’s what we’re going to continue to do.”
