RUGBY: Devizes 18 Buckingham 15
2:50pm Tuesday 24th September 2013 in Sport
DEVIZES broke their duck at South West One East level after a tight victory over their similarly-winless visitors on Saturday.
The home pack absorbed some early Buckingham pressure and took the lead when fly-half Andy Thompson booted a penalty.
With the Devizes scrum going well, a strike against the head allowed the ball to be worked wide for wing Jorge Wadman to scored his first try of the season.
The pack dominance continued as the steamrollered upfield, a final nudge allowing flanker Julian Taylor the touchdown, Thompson converting for a 15-0 lead.
Buckingham responded as their forwards ground out a position from which to score an unconverted try.
The tide turned in the second half, Devizes losing Lewis Paget and Rory Brown to injury and then shipping a converted try to bring it back to 15-12.
The sides exchanged penalties, Thompson landing for the Saddlebacks, before home centre Mark Warburton was sin-binned for a high tackle.
Buckingham pushed strongly late on, but the Devizes defence held out for a famous first South West One East win.
