SWINDON TOWN: Will League Cup history repeat itself for Miles?
THE last time a Premier League club visited the County Ground, Miles Storey enjoyed the night of his life. A little less than 12 months on he wouldn’t mind a similar experience this evening.
In October last year, Aston Villa arrived in Wiltshire for a Capital One Cup fourth-round clash with Swindon Town and looked as though they were sailing through to the quarter-finals thanks to goals from Christian Benteke and Gabby Agbonlahor.
With 12 minutes remaining, however, manager Paolo Di Canio threw on Storey in an effort to reduce arrears - and in the space of three minutes the lightning quick teenager from Sandwell catapulted himself to regional fame.
Storey struck twice, the second an audacious flick between his own legs, to pull the game back to 2-2 before Benteke scored in the dying moments to win the tie for Villa.
A year later, and having just signed a new contract with Swindon, Storey has matured considerably. But he still remembers that night fondly and would love another go at a big top-flight team.
“It’s a round early so I might have to wait to score two goals,” he joked in conversation with the Advertiser. “I’m looking forward to it. I’ve never played a Premier League team as big as Chelsea at the County Ground.
“Last year against Aston Villa was great to even come on, never mind what happened.
“With all the crowd the County Ground was buzzing and the Villa fans brought a load as well which made the atmosphere even better.
“I’m sure it will be the same for Chelsea.”
Storey is likely to be named on the substitutes’ bench for the fixture, in which Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Chelsea’s Spanish playmaker Juan Mata will start.
“You’ve got to look at it as testing yourself against some of the best players in the country,” said Storey.
“They obviously won the Champions League two years ago, so any chance you get to play against players like that is an honour really.”
