City will face the backlash, says McEveley
FOLLOWING the nature of Saturday’s defeat to Wolves, Jay McEveley expects Swindon Town to take all their frustration out on Bristol City this weekend.
The Robins totally dominated League One’s most expensive squad at Molineux, only to be undone 3-2, but Mark Cooper’s men have been presented the perfect platform to right those wrongs when local rivals City come calling.
After Gillingham grabbed a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw last month, Town retaliated by beating star-studded QPR away from home in the Capital One Cup and trouncing Crewe at the County Ground, and McEveley has suggested Swindon could be preparing something similar for their noisy neighbours.
He said: “We saw it after Gillingham, when we lost a goal in the last minute, that Crewe got five put past them. It would be nice to do that again, wouldn’t it?
“It’s going to be a full house at the County Ground, a local derby, one we’re looking forward to and we’ve just got to make sure we match them with hard work and determination. Hopefully our quality can see us through.”
McEveley has been impressed by how quickly the Town team have gelled this season following a huge turnaround of players over the summer months.
And he gives manager Mark Cooper plenty of credit for that, praising the Robins boss’s man-management skills.
“It just shows that what we are doing in training is coming onto the pitch and the younger lads are taking onboard what the manager and the older players are saying to them,” said the full-back.
“They’re expressing their talents, they’re going out there with no fear and that’s what they need as young players. They don’t need to be thinking ‘if I do this or I do this the manager’s going to be screaming at me or the manager’s going to drop me the next game’. He tells them to go out and enjoy themselves and do what they can do.
“He knows they are very talented players and it’s a joy to play in.”
