WOMEN'S FOOTBALL: Brizzell expects winning start
NEW Swindon Town Ladies boss Jason Brizzell is confident his side will get off to a winning start when they kick off their new season against Portsmouth on Sunday.
Brizzell has taken over from former boss Glyn Evans at the end of last season, with the Town Ladies now operating under the club’s Football in the Community banner.
Town are again competing in the South West Combination League after a good finish last season and after a promising pre-season Brizzell is confident of success.
“I’m not going to put too much pressure on the ladies or me but the key thing for us is to make sure we are going forward as a club and making progress,” he said.
“We have obviously changed the manager and got the new reserve team so there have been plenty of changes and hopefully we can get to where we want to.
“I haven’t watched much of Portsmouth but looking at last year’s league table it’s a game we’re expecting to win in all honesty.
“I’m very confident of getting off to a good start, and if we can that would be great.
“They were able to finish sixth last year so there’s a lot to live up to, but I am confident we can do it.”
Having previously managed men’s teams at Hungerford Town and Lambourn Sports, the Town job is Brizzell’s first involvement with a ladies side, but he has been impressed with what he’s seen and believes the future is bright.
“We’ve been training hard twice a week over the summer and we’re all really looking good,” he said.
“This is my first ladies opportunity and it’s been fantastic so far.
“The players are full of commitment and passion and have a great attitude, and there’s a nice blend in there too which has been great.
“I know there are some really good age groups coming through and the future is looking very good.
“In a couple of years we will be really kicking on because of the young players coming through the system and that’s great to see.”
