Luongo backs Bale to shine in Spain
MASSIMO Luongo thinks former teammate Gareth Bale’s inner child will help him take his world record move to Real Madrid in his stride.
Bale was the big story on transfer deadline day, as the Welshman was formally unveiled at the Santiago Bernabeu in front of 20,000 Madrid fans following his £86million switch from Tottenham.
Just two days earlier, Luongo had been named as Swindon Town’s big-money signing of the summer as the club shelled out £400,000 to take him off Spurs’ hands.
Having trained with Bale during the pair’s time at White Hart Lane, Luongo is better placed than most to give a character assessment of the wing wizard - and he suggested Bale will have no trouble bedding in amongst Real’s Galacticos.
He told the Advertiser: “He’s a brilliant player, the best player I’ve trained with probably. He can shine in any team.
“He doesn’t have to touch the ball for 15 minutes and he can have one shot and it will be a brilliant goal.
“In Spain they’re not going to be on you as much as in England. There’s not as much pressure, it’s slower, you have more time on the ball. I think he’ll do well.
“The only thing is who is going to outshine who - Ronaldo or Bale.
“It’s about big names and if he can handle the pressure. I think he can, I think he’s good enough.
“I don’t know him too well but as I’ve seen he’s not loud, he’s quiet and he’s still young.
“He’s got a bit of a kid inside him and I think that could benefit him at a big club.
“Although he’s the most expensive player I think he’ll keep his head down and do his work.
“He won’t see himself as big as Ronaldo and others and I think that could do him a favour.
“He’s used to earning that much money and being worth that much, I think he’ll be alright.”
