BOWLS: Finals weekend at Devizes
THE Bowls Wiltshire men’s national championship and men’s, ladies and mixed competition finals take place at Devizes this weekend.
Wootton Bassett have the largest representation with six finalists, only surpassed for top spot by Swindon’s Westlecot with nine.
Box compete in two while Chippenham Town, hosts Devizes and Malmesbury are all represented in one final each.
Bassett’s Kyle Anderson faces Ben Gadd (Holt) in the champion of champions singles final on Saturday while the fours championship event is an all-Bassett affair between rinks skipped by Andy Crump and Dave Snell.
In the afternoon Snell faces Graham Hatherall (Westlecot) in the two wood singles final and Tom Walkey defends his county junior (U25) singles title against Westlecot’s Paul Stokes.
The Bassett trio of James Nobbs, Kyle Anderson (sub for Neil Smith) and Gary Morphet defend their triples crown against Justin Davis’ team from Holt.
Devizes’ Denise Howard faces Purton’s Julie Jones in the semi-finals of the ladies county unbadged singles, with the final in the afternoon.
Jean Collier (Box) meets Highworth’s Linda Kingston in the ladies county champion of champions singles final in the morning Malmesbury trio of Brian Reynolds, Colin Hicks and Malcolm Curtis will hopeit is third time lucky when they face Alderbury on Sunday morning in the county men’s Over 60 triples competition final.
They lost in the 2012 and 2010 finals.
Chippenham’s brother and sister duo of Kara and Oliver Little face Westlecot’s Jake Webster and Michael Titcombe Jnr in the Bowls Wiltshire U21 pairs final.
In the afternoon she joins her Box teammates in the defence of the Top Ten team title they have won for the past three years against Stratton Churchway.
