EQUESTRIAN: Jessica’s proving a real world beater
SHOWJUMPING starlet Jessica Mendoza is hoping that she can carry on making waves on the world scene after clinching a superb world ranking victory in Belgium earlier this month.
The 17-year-old, from Tockenham, produced a clear round on ride Spirit T to win the three-star world ranking class at the Flanders Horse Event in Beervelde, finishing two seconds ahead of Belgium’s Patrik Spits and the USA’s Lauren Hough.
Mendoza, who is a pupil at St Mary’s School in Calne, also had a host of other successes in Belgium, winning the 1.40m class with Ramiro de Bellevue, finishing second in the Prijs Kiwanis Gent 1m30 on Nuggets L’Amandour, fourth in the Prijs de Client class, and fifth in the Prijs Club FM 1m40.
The Wiltshire teenager has also been competing in the Grand Prix at the Normandie Horse Show in Saint Lo, France, this week and says that she is keeping busy as she goes in search of more world ranking points this season.
“It was a really big win for me in Belgium because I was up against some of the top riders on their top horses – it was really nice to win,” said Mendoza.
“There are a few more competitions coming up this season where I can get world ranking points and that’s what I’m trying to do because I want to be near the top one day.
“I’m away pretty much every weekend but I enjoy doing it.”
