KICK-OFF: We're up for the fight
BEN John thinks you should write Chippenham Town off at your peril this season.
The Bluebirds goalkeeper admits that he was wary about his side’s chances following the departures of Ashley Williams, Alex Kite and Dean Griffiths at the start of the summer, but after his first pre-season at Hardenhuish Park, John is full of renewed optimism.
The former Cinderford Town man cemented himself at Chippenham’s number one between the sticks after joining the Bluebirds in October last year and John reckons his side’s team spirit will be their biggest weapon during the forthcoming campaign.
“At the start of it I was looking at the squad and realising that we’d lost a few players,” said John.
“If you’d looked around the changing room last year, it was all men and some big names but this year we’ve got a few young lads in but they’re all people who want to be here and want to work hard for the team.
“It’s been the hardest pre-season I’ve done at any club and I think I’ve lost nearly a stone but the lads are looking so fit and I think that this year is all about hard work.
“I think that if we can carry that through and stay injury-free, it’s going to be an interesting season.
“A few people have written us off, saying that we haven’t made many signings and things like that.
“But with the lads we’ve got, the team spirit’s as good as it’s ever been and I think we might surprise a few people.
“I think hard work, fitness and dedication are going to be our main emphasis this year and we don’t want to give teams a rest during the whole 90 minutes.
“I just can’t wait now and I wish the season had started a couple of weeks ago.”
