THE VIC MORGAN COLUMN: You don't miss a minute of football these days
6:00am Thursday 15th August 2013 in Sport
I HAVE to hang my head in shame this week. That's how I feel after missing a Town game.
I have a genuine excuse and can provide a note if required. However, there is nothing worse than the 90 minutes on a Saturday when your team is playing and you're not there.
When I was much younger and before such sorcery as the internet, I would visualise what was happening at places such as Hartlepool, Carlisle and Notts County, while kicking a ball around in my Water Eaton back garden.
Then came the agonising wait for the football results to be read out and that moment when you heard the mostly negative scoreline. Surely that was wrong, surely they're going to say that the Swindon defeat was really a win and apologise for their mistake.
Nowadays the news is instantaneous. I'm sure most people in Devon heard my scream of delight when Massimo Luongo scored on Saturday, even though I was in a soundproof box presenting a sports programme. Agony is the only way to describe it and it’s even worse when you read on Twitter about how people are meeting up before the game for a pint and a right natter.
Thank goodness for this Saturday and the delights of Percy Thrower’s Garden Centre before the Shrewsbury game. Then the delicious cheese and potato pies on offer at the ground. Wonderful.
I guess the thing is that for the majority of our footballing lives we've been devoted to a team that's kicked around the lower leagues. Do we care? Of course it would be nice to get into the upper echelons.
For most of us, though, it’s just about OUR team, whoever and whenever they play. There is NOTHING like being there to feel joy, pain, anger, frustration or just having a moan for 90 minutes.
It‘s the best feeling in the world isn't it?
