SWINDON TOWN: Liverpool stopper set to sign

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Liverpool goalkeeper Tyrell Belford Liverpool goalkeeper Tyrell Belford

SWINDON Town are close to completing the signing of young Liverpool keeper Tyrell Belford.

The Advertiser understands the Robins are finalising a deal for the 19-year-old, who joined the Premier League outfit’s academy in 2009 after the Reds picked him up from Coventry City.

Nuneaton-born Belford, who was in the same year group as former Swindon stopper Jamie Stephens at Liverpool, has earned international recognition at various levels and was part of the England Under 17 World Cup squad in Mexico in 2011.

Meanwhile, the Robins are also set to announce the permanent signings of two trialists who have impressed during their time training at SN1.

Holding midfielder Yaser Kasim and central defender Raphael Rossi Branco are believed to be ready to put pen to paper on contracts at the County Ground.

Kasim was formerly on Brighton’s books while Branco has most recently plied his trade in non-league with Whitehawk.

Finally, Swindon Town season ticket holders will be able to pick up their tickets for the upcoming campaign from the County Ground from Friday. Those who have requested the tickets to be posted out should receive them in the coming days.

A Swindon spokesman said: “We’d like to thank all those fans who have bought season tickets for their patience.”

No doubt 2 and 2 will be put together and people make 5.
I will get in early and say Brentford signed David button last night so no need for Wes.
Same as yesterday, I just want to wish all3 potentl signings the best of luck.

Tyrell looks like a big lad, two England goalies on the books is impressive, not sure where that leaves Bedwell (2nd or 3rd), but not uncommon to have 3 goal keepers on the books, just wish we had a combination league or similar the seconds could have a regular run out.

Seems good to me, competition for the shirt, and a worthy sub in case of injury. Product of Liverpool youth so should be good at this level and a ready made replacement should a silly offer come our way. Good logical sense in many ways

Old Town Robin,

Very good point made about having a Combination Side again, something which was too hastily disbanded by us a couple of seasons ago. Would prove invaluable with players coming back from injury etc and young player development.

I see this as a positive as although I don't see Wes leaving in the near term, he will go (whether it be Jan, next summer or later). Few of us know how good Bedwell is due to his limited match time, and this lad appears to have good credentials.

It is not clear whether it is a permanent or loan signing, although the article indicates the former.

Personally this makes perfect sense. Wes I really hope is here for this season, but he is a great keeper and going to want to play at a higher level and who can blame him! The lad sounds good and a top replacement for the future - therefore give him a season and we could have two good young keepers and a good tidy sum for Wes! Good business in my book.

Thoughts are the same, I think if it was a loan they would have said so, also don't think he was released, so probably a small fee with adds on as part of the deal.

Before Swindon even think about selling Wes they should add up all the points that our very ordinary division 4 goalkeepers have cost us over the last 40 years - they should make absolutely sure of keeping him here for good - offer him a 10 year contract !!!!

Offer him a 10 year contract ? Haha - we all know what you mean . All players must have the right to progress their footie careers and no ambitious player would sign a long term contract.

I read up a bit on Belford when looking at how Stephens had got on since his big move
.
Even though they did rotate the Keepers up at Liverpool - it was obvious from the reports that this lad was viewed as their number 1 (think his caps show that too)
.
I also guess him coming here and Stephens to Newport could back that up!
.
I'm also guessing all the changes at Liverpool in the GK department has prompted them to reassess their needs - i.e. just signed a 24 year old - so will not need another young keeper for a while
.
Good move in my books - lets be ready for when the day comes that Wes leaves as he will leave and that is nothing to do with Jed or Power asset stripping to line their pockets - its due to Wes being a great keeper!
.
Give this lad a year and a few cup games this season and he could be ready to step in next summer if the time is then right for Wes to move on - remember Wes was an untried 20/21 year old when he came here

If we sign these 3, I wish them well & good luck to them. Extra goalkeeper is a must, as we've been lucky that Wes has not been injured or suspended.

The other 2, Kasim Iraqi born, 1 app for Brighton, loan spell at Luton & a youth player at Spurs (theres' a surprise). Branco, Brazilian born, Brighton brought him to this country, no apps. Who are Whitehawk? Perhaps their being signed is just to make numbers up or as we've not had their flags on the back of the programme yet!

Lots of talk about Wes leaving but I don't see it to be honest.

Goalkeeper is a specialised position, there is only one per team of 11 on the pitch. Therefore only 92 Goalkeepers playing regularly week in week out. Most teams have a number 1 choice and most teams will not spend big on a goal keeper.

Wes is the number 1 choice here and is therefore pretty much guaranteed to play each week. He has just signed a new contract so must be happy with his wages.

Would he go to another club just to sit on the bench ? Isn't that why he joined us, to play football ?

The only way I could see Wes moving on is to another Lge 1 or championship side that would see him as number 1 choice. How many clubs from that group could afford him ?

I saw Newport play my local side Taunton Town in a pre season friendly a few weeks ago.

Jamie Stephens looked a very assured keeper and I can see him doing well at Newport and getting a move further up the leagues.
