SWINDON TOWN: Boss targets hungry loan signings

Kevin MacDonald Kevin MacDonald

KEVIN MacDonald is not specifically looking for young stars or experienced heads as he scours the loan market for new signings, instead targeting players with the hunger to succeed at the County Ground.

The Robins boss will soon be able to add to his depleted squad, with the transfer embargo hanging over the club expected to be lifted this week, and the Adver has learnt that three Tottenham youngsters have been lined up as potential targets.

But MacDonald has stressed that the age of his new recruits is not the most important matter at hand when it comes to bringing players in on loan.

“Obviously lots of players are being thrown at us, I want hungry players,” he said. “They’re the ones who want to do well.

“Whether it’s the younger players from top Premier League sides or whether it is experienced players who are going to be hungry to win promotion - ultimately that’s what we’re trying to achieve.

“It’s going to be a case of seeing the players, speaking to the players and seeing what their ambitions are.

“What we’ll be trying to do is speak to the player before we try to sign them.

“We might target them and say who we want but speak to them and sometimes when you speak to them you get the feeling for what he’s for.

“Would they be coming out just because they’re coming out on loan or would they really see what Swindon Town is about for the next 10 games?

“It’s about trying to get promotion to the Championship.”

MacDonald did not confirm Town’s interest in the Spurs trio, believed to consist of Dean Parrett, Cristian Ceballos and another unnamed midfielder, but he did not reject the notion either.

He said: “There’s nothing that we’ve done anything about, I don’t know the full story about it.

“I do know that Tottenham have got the best under 21 group in the country at the moment, previously it had been my old club Aston Villa, so obviously we’d have to look at them and the other clubs. If they’re better than what we’ve got and they can add something to the team then that’s what we need to try to do.”

Rubbing salt in if he goes to one of our old rivals!

Rivalry to be renewed next season if we go up and they come down. Now that would be interesting.

Putting myself in their place I'd be nervous of the baggage and the lack of experience, but we all know the good side of PDC and it depends which out weighs on that issue.

The story ain't about the has been known as pdc, everyone needs to move on.
Kevin has got some important decisions to make and he's clearly keeping things under his hat,it's nice to see he's clearly thinking about the next few games and the championship we need some experience to get us through the next ten games not youngsters, but clearly we need to be moving down that route if we get into the championship but short term we need to get their first with good solid players.

As Mushy said the article is about our efforts tp bring in loan signings not the future of PDC.

Don't see it matters which day the embargo is lifted now, but have to admit to keep on reading the same old twaddle of today or tomorrow is getting a bit old hat now. As no new players available for tonight and we don't have a game for 7 days as long as it gets sorted this week in time to prepare for the Yeovil match, fine, but I can't help thinking it's a little too late for us as valuable home points have been squandered this season, we haven't been able to play anywhere near as good as we were leading up to the Christmas period and that must be attribruted to a depleated squad due to the embargo and injuries.

Can only hope for the best, but with a seriously under strength team selection playing for their new manager I wouldn't put any money on a win. The formation and tactics on Saturday seemed out of balance with no real threat down the right, Huge blow to us if Nathan isn't fit, don't think we'll miss Miller as much, If macca goes to right back, I'd rather see Louis Thompson play in the centre instead of Navarro who looks unfit and certainly isn't getting any better.

Just want to get this out the way now and hope we don't lose ground on the rest of the top 6.

Paolo oversaw the most exciting period at this club for many a long year. The fact that it ended on a sour note should not cloud the fact he galvanised this club and booted it firmly in the right direction.

The Adver's track record of predicting when the embargo is "expected to be lifted" is not good. Are they being fed duff information by the club?

If the problem is the £1.2m, why can't the club simply tell us how much of it has been paid and when the rest of it will be paid? We might then have some chance of working out for ourselves when the embargo will be lifted. I think it would also be very interesting to know how much they paid to acquire the club.

As you say Old Town as long as the embargo is lifted within the next 48 hours I am sure KM has some potential loan players in mind. I like his thinking that he wants to meet the players & get the feel of their passion & desire to play for STFC. Some people are good at spoofing but if he gets a couple with the same mind set as Darren Ward then he will not go to far wrong.

I don't think our chances are all but over, depending on tonight's game of course, nothing less than a draw please boys. There is not one stand out team in our league this year hence why we must try & grasp this opportunity, who knows what next season will bring.

Also all teams/players are having iffy games, did you see Burnley last night, Charlie Austin who was Europe's leading goal scorer a few months back hardly got a look in due to poor service, just like our front guys, who are always having to take the ball with their backs to goal at the moment.

Just touching on PDC as Reading are just up the road from me & I take some stick I can tell you. I think he may fit in well their. They are not big spenders but I think their budget would be acceptable to him & let's be fair as much as I hate the way he walked out in our hour of need he does have the drawing power to bring in players who admire him & think he can improve their game. One good additional player could change their season so he could always try & buy Richie back for a million, as Bournemouth have been dreadful since he signed & what a profit they would make eh.

2:09pm

MONEY OWED ON TRANSFERS AND STAFF

Steve Murrall and Gary Hooper were of course asked about the transfer embargo currently on the club, the reasons for it, and when it will be lifted.

SM: “We don’t owe Shrewsbury anything as we paid them this week, and we have some others that need to be paid and we are in the process of doing that.

"That will lift the embargo, but when we took over, outside of our initial investment the Football League demanded £1.2million was put in an account to be ring-fenced in relation to the embargo.

"We didn’t have that in loose change, so we had to arrange that which should be done in the next few days. Hopefully by Monday, or 24 hours later to give me a break, I am confident we will be out of embargo. Paying football clubs is all taken care of and all fine.

1950, it could be called delegation, but then on the other hand it could be construed as passing the buck.

Jeds interview on SKY regards giving PdC his job back was seen to be a bit indecisive at the time with what the true situation was. Then his comments that first Paolo could have his loans, which was obviously not true because of the embargo and then he's said it's up to Kevin who he brings in on loan and when, seems to me either he doesn't like to interfere or can't agree to anything based on true situation, but won't admit it, or he doesn't like making decisions and lets others do that for him. That's not being critical, just an observation, probably the complete opposite of Andrew Fitton when it comes to control, but then he was a bit of a ditherer too.

I'm with you on that, my mum's from Reading and keeps threatening to buy my son a Reading kit, who I've been taking to see the Town since he was three. The only reason she hasn't bought it yet is that she believes me when I say it will be instantly set on fire. I remember away days at Elm Park, they're a chavvy load of scumbags. In fact I remember one game they were coming over the fence into our terrace and the police were on the pitch trying to stop them. Ref didn't stop the game and Reading broke through and scored. Don't get me wrong, I'm far from happy that he appears to be going there. But from his point of view it's a chance to manage in the Premier League. It would be worse if he was going to another L1 or a Championship club, in my opinion.

I'm not an apologist for PDC but it doesn't sit right with me that all of a sudden a lot of our fans see him as a figure of hate. He did, after all, guide us to a league title and Wembley appearance less than a year ago.

Thanks Oldham. £1.2million is a fair chunk of cash. Is this to cover further outstanding debts, or are the FL just making sure Jed and chums have sufficient money to run the club?

Didn't King and Wilson both get us into the Div 1 playoffs with less money than Di Canio.

McMahon won League 2.

Think we need some perspective on Di Canio.

Sh1tbags. Would love to see Paolo take them down.
Best Elm Park memory for me was when we got back to my car after the game only to find that it was flooded. While we were sorting it out, this lady in the house we were parked outside took pity on us and invited us in for a cup of tea. So we accepted.

About ten minutes later her son came home, came into the living room to find five big Swindon lads, draped in UJ flags and Swindon scarves, being waited on hand and foot by his Mum being served tea and cup cakes. I'll never forget the look on his face. He went straight upstairs to his room (with no tea)

Why can't we get an owner like that!

As I understand it, it is to ensure there are enough finances in place to see out the remainder of this seasons commitments.

Unfortunately, we are never going to be privvy to all the information needed to put our minds at rest.

I personally don't think there is any need to be concerned as the board seem to be making all the right noises.

As it is out of our hands, I guess only time will tell.

3 points tonight with a good performance will lift the spirits. Loan signings can wait 'til the end of the week.

Without checking any records, I think that Pat Terry only played for the Town for one season.
What I will say with full confidence, is that having followed Swindon Town for more than 60 years, Pat Terry was the very best "Header" of the ball I have ever seen in a Swindon shirt.

Yes Greenml they did. Andy King did it with the players sometimes not being payed. Danny Wilsons play off team included, Austin,Richie,Ferry,

Had a chuckle at that but have to agree, would love to see them demoted (twice for luck!) and see how many show up at that soulless out of town stadium then - I'm sure there are soem decent, long standing and loyal Reading fans but there're also a LOT of casuals who turn up who have no real interest in football cause it's something to do (living in Basingstoke now, for my sins, I know a lot of their support comes from there - chavs with nothing better to do).

Would be interesting to see how many of them get sick of it if they were languishing in League 1. Anyone who was at Coventry saw how laughable it was having a home support of around 10,000 spread out around three stands in a 30,000 seater ground.

Who knows, a couple of years in the doldrums might teach them a bit of humility, just as it seems to have done with Pompey's support, who are a lot less gobby these days (and a darn sight friendlier as well).

Yes, I know all logic goes out the window when you're riled up, but this perfect image is forming in my head of a Reading demotion, town going up, and hammering them at their lego block stadium next season. We can dream :-)

I don't know him (or indeed want to), but a pound to a penny he's the type of fan that spouts negatives throughout the whole game instead of getting behind the team.

It was a Tuesday night just before Bonfire night and, as such, a lot of lads had smuggled fireworks into the ground. The Reading fans on Shrivvy Road attempted to aim some rockets into the Town End and managed to put one into the North Stand! Pat Terry was a real hard case, part of the Terry clan which includes JT. He scared the sh1t out of most goalies at corners! Happy Days!!

Well I think Grim's got a point. If the new owners want to dispel the notion that they are bringing nothing to the party, it is up to them to start doing some straight talking. Oldham says he thinks the board are making all the right noises. I don't. I think they give an impression of evasiveness when faced with the important questions. We are at a critical point in the season. The bottom line is that, weeks after completion of the takeover, the new owners have not yet been able to convince the Football League that we can be trusted to sign new players. Grim says "the club is running on complete bullshiit". Until we see or hear something that proves otherwise, that statement will have the support of me and a few others.

There's a good chance they are not the Black/Arrib millionaires types, and I suspect they are pretty green at this level of investment in football. So any investment or financial decision is possibly bounced around the board for ratification.
I would personally prefer this if this is the case, than promising the world and just saying what people want to hear.
I think we are going to a poor or average type financial club again.

I wonder if they are nervous of what promotion would cost - in players, ground improvements etc..
I don't think this is the reason for an apparent delay in getting the embargo lifted. I just feel they are being ultra cautious.

Den,
I am under the impression that to date they have "ring fenced" nearly £1.2 mil. as part of the takeover.

I don't consider that to be bringing nothing to the party.

Like all fans I would love the new board to say that there is £10 mil. available for transfers, there is £25 mil. set aside for ground developement, and Gordon Ramsey will be serving hotdogs, but the truth of the matter is that isn't going to happen.

For me and I suspect many others, I am just grateful that they were there to catch us as we fell.

If we have to wait a while as they chip away at a few lingering problems then so be it.

With regard to being evasive to selected questioning, there could be many reasons for that including sensitivity where there may be a legal dispute, or they may just prefer that some things are not in the public domain.

Fair point Old Town, I don't get to read it every day, it just seemed that Louis, bless him, went off on a tangeant & everyone followed

I didn't read or listen to the Q&A session on Saturday.... was the identity of the mystery investors discussed at all? I'm sure Jed has mentioned other investors, but who are they, do the exist, why the need for secrecy? I think until the names of the other investors are revealed I'm going to remain slightly concerned.

Re the hungry new loan signings.

Hope we feed them better than their parent clubs.

Plenty of pasta should do the job.

See you all at the match tonight.

If I remember correctly we were actually told that it was 2 companies who were investing, but they intended remaining anonymous for personal reasons.

No further information was given at the Q & A on that matter.

I think it is more important that we are shown how Jed & Co have set out their short/medium and long term plans for the club, rather than googling some business owner to see how much he is worth. Because if we're honest, thats all we really want to do.

This is not the time to be experimenting with Premier League fledglings, giving others playing experience, or having to bring people up to fitness.

In addition to losing our wealthy owners, manager, backroom team and star player, we also 'lost' loanees Bostock, Martin and Hollands, and let Pack, Green and BWP slip through our grasp. That's the level of loan player we need and we need them fast.

There does seem to be a lack of urgency although appreciate owners don't have £1.2m in small change lying around. Does make you wonder though when all the ratification process was dragging on for a month. Was it not flagged then?

And is this a new level of intervention by the Football League?? How many other clubs are under embargo unless they have deposited funds and 'ringfenced' the rest of the season's budget? I doubt if many - or any - otherwise they wouldn't be in business, given most post losses. Stinks of our friends at the FL making one rule for us.

Just been on the BBC website. The Italian is modest to a fault!

"I have already proven my ability in League Two and League One, where there are many arrogant and average players and I was able to turn their mentality and help them become better footballers.

Paolo Di Canio has been linked with the Reading vacancy following the departure of Brian McDermott
"You can imagine if I had the chance to do the same at the top level. I proved in League One and Two that I was the best manager, and I now feel ready for the next level.”

If he thinks League 1 and 2 players are arrogant .............

Good luck to Paolo he's the best manager we have had in a long... long time. Cant believe how people have turned on him.
...simples...because many people believe he turned on us!
Under embargo, possible administration, investor no longer wanted the club. He was basically forced out. He turned this club around, gave back the pride and passion. Hopefully KM has the personality and motivation skills to continue Paolos great work.
How was he FORCED OUT...

pdc had just signed a new contract that doubled his and most probibly his staffs wages.
The board wonted out as he did not like working with pdc..
So the money was stopped..
THEN we sold ritchie to stop the club from going in2 administration..
So what did pdc do instead of getting everyone to fight the cause ?? YES he had a fit then walked...

SO HOW IS THAT BEING FORCED OUT...

and why are we all talking about a man that quite STFC ?

I don't that but it makes you worried about the finances.

Do think we have thrown away a good chance at automatic promotion.

As for PDC.... why all the angst.... As I said before... wow he got us out of the 2nd Div with the biggest budget.

Humiliated our best player (Wes) and carried on like a spoilt brat.

As a manager you have to manage with what you've got sometime (in any job). He couldn't cope.

At Wembley he failed with team selection and to raise the team.

Any bigger club picking him up would be taking a big gamble.

I renewed mine today, it's got to be done. you know you will regret it if you don't.

Get in there & renew your tickets asap if you can, I know all money is tight but with an interest free monthly payment available until the end of March make things alot easier if you can't pay all at once.

3 points tonight please.

I have tried all day not to comment on Paolo, but whatever your thoughts are of him now and I am sure we will all have differing views, but I personally miss him, listening to Kmac after the game talking about 1 point won and how well we performed made me want to scream at the radio, Things are just dull at the moment, the atmosphere in the ground has dropped and the performances of the team Cov aside haven't been good....

I wish it had ended with PDC in a different manager, but wow what an 18months it was, I loved every minute, but I wouldn't have him back after the way he skipped off dropping us in it....

and before you criticise, I support the club, not the mangager or the owner of the moment, for that reason I have laready renewed my ST and will be here next year regardless of who owns us or manages us, STFC is about us not the latest gatekeeper... Thats why I never criticise our own fans views, because they are entitled to them....

Yep. I think we signed him from them. He might have been playing for us that night. I don't remember much of his time with us but I do recall him getting a hat trick in the first 12 minutes of a game against Bournemouth.
Den,

I remember that amazing Pat Terry hat trick too.

County Ground was an absolute mudbath. Also, I have a vague memory the game finished early because of the weather, I think??

Yes Greenml they did. Andy King did it with the players sometimes not being payed. Danny Wilsons play off team included, Austin,Richie,Ferry,

Caddis,Douglas we had a much better side then than we have now. Fodringham ,Ward and poss Macca would be the only one of PDC signings to get into Wilsons team.
And he still managed to balls up promotion!

Oldham, I didn't say that the new owners are bringing nothing to the party. What I'm trying to say is that they will dispel that notion and do their image a power of good if they just tell us what they ARE doing - and not just in vague platitudes.

You say they have ringfenced nearly £1.2m. Have they? All we know is that they have been instructed to do so and that they have not yet satisfied that condition. If they have introduced, say, £1m, why not just tell us that and when they will put in the remainder? We could all understand their position then. Why should they be shy about telling us something that can only enhance their reputation with the fans? What downside can there possibly be?
