6:07pm
That's it from us for today, ladies and gents. A disappointing result for Swindon, especially given the position they found themselves in with five minutes remaining.
However, the Robins have not lost ground on second place and a win at Brentford on Tuesday would be a huge result in their push for automatic promotion.
Join us from Griffin Park for all the best coverage of that game but until then goodnight.
6:06pm
Defender Jay McEveley was cursing his side's luck after today's game when he spoke to the media.
JAY MCEVELEY
“It’s disappointing because we fought so hard, but apparently the penalty was a dubious one and we found ourselves at 1-1, then we took the lead and got pegged back again, he said.
“We have been waiting for a bit of luck today for a while, and it has come but unfortunately we could hold onto it.
“It was a great ball in for them, and he has powered in the header and to be fair it was a good header.
“We always play the same way and our attitude and desire to win the game is the same home and away, and we have to sit down and discuss why.
“The manager is big on getting us onto the ball and passing then working it up to the strikers and making something happen from there.
“We need to put the ball in the back of the net, and get used to the way he wants us to play, but we are all good players so we should be able to do it.
“An impact sub or someone who can make something happen might be what we need, and we will see if it can happen.”
5:55pm
Midfielder Simon Ferry was not happy with his own personal performance this afternoon, despite scoring Town's second goal.
SIMON FERRY
“When you are 2-1 with five to go you shouldn’t end up drawing and we should have won," he said.
“We can’t be throwing away points like that at home, and all the boys are disappointed.
“It’s hard to put our fingers on it, but we need to pick things up because teams that get promoted win at home.
“There are no easy games in this league, and some teams get themselves behind the ball and then hit us on the counter attack, which seems to work.
“I didn’t play well, but I try and get in the box and I’m delighted to be scoring some goals.
“The manager wants us to try and get in behind them and get on the ball, but I’m not sure I did it well enough.
“He wants me on the ball as much as I can and wander anywhere, I’m tucked in and he doesn’t want me playing wide and wants me to get behind the strikers.”
5:45pm
5:45pm
Youth team players Connor Waldon and Alex Ferguson were in the matchday squad for today's game, and althought they didn't make the bench, Thompson believes the experience will help them.
NATHAN THOMPSON
“It’s fantastic to see, and the young guys came and trained with us twice last week," he said.
“I remember what it was like to be in the first-team squad, and it will do a lot of them.
“Paul Bodin will have prepared them well, and hopefully we will be seeing a lot more of them.”
5:38pm
Defender Nathan Thompson came off this afternoon with a knee injury, which will be assessed tomorrow.
NATHAN THOMPSON
“Not too sure, I jumped for a header and did something to my knee cap, but we will see in the morning," he said.
“It’s disappointing the goal went against us because we deserved a win.
“With our defensive record to concede two is very disappointing, and we have been fantastic all season which is why it hurts so badly.
“We will work hard across the weekend, and Tuesday’s game is a huge one after today’s results because we could have gone second.”
5:23pm
Didnt feel like Town would hold on with ten to go. Clean sheets are a necessity when near the top, look at Sheffield United #stfcadver

5:21pm
Town boss Kevin MacDonald has spoken to the media after today's game, and admitted his team should have won after leading twice.
KEVIN MACDONALD
“In the end it doesn’t matter if we deserved it or not the score was 2-2. We are disappointed, but these things happen," he said.
“We got stretched looking for the third goal and it was a good cross, but I think we deserved all three points.
“I thought the penalty was a bit harsh and I will have to see it again, but when you lead twice you should kick on and win.
“Home form is very important, and most teams have a better home record than they do away, but it’s not for the want of trying.
“It’s important to get away points too, and we need to get our heads down and keep going to pick up points.
“We are where we are and I don’t know when we can get some in, I have one or two in mind I would like to get in, but we will have to see.
“It was disappointing not to be able to see the whole game through, but we move on.
“You never get too high when you win and two low when you lose, and this is somewhere in between.”

4:52pm

4:43pm
79 minutes: GOAL 2-1 TOWN (Ferry) Town stretch the play wide to Rooney, who cuts back and gets a shot off which McCarey spills, and Ferry is there to slam it home with his left foot. The Scot was only four yards out, but he did really well to work it back onto his left and finish.
4:43pm
SUBSTITUTION: Nicky Featherstone on for Westcarr.
4:39pm
75 minutes: Thompson is off the field injured, and as Walsall take advantage the Saddlers appeal for a penalty for a foul on Grigg. The referee says no, but Flint has to be alert to block a Westcarr shot well.

67 minutes: Grigg gets in behind the Town defence, but instead of pulling the ball back for Brandy he shoots himself and it goes out for a throw.
4:29pm
64 minutes: Ferry’s cross is only headed clear as far as McCormack, and the captain’s dipping volley has McCarey scrambling but just flies over the bar.
4:28pm
SUBSTITUTION: Collins replaced by Adam Rooney (64)
4:24pm
Ferry and Roberts have now swapped flanks.
4:24pm
59 minutes: Ferry chips into the back post, but Collins doesn’t challenge for the header with any authority and it’s cleared.

Will the new owners be maintaining the same wage budget as there was under Paolo Di Canio?
SM: “In regard to the wage budget, we are maintaining that. It is a high wage budget, but you have to pay to get a good team. It will stay as it is, but some of the costs that have gone have contributed to the wage budget. That has reduced it significantly.
“The club no longer has any debt, but if it did and was funding it every month that’s a massive amount of money going out every month. We are in a fantastic position because we are a club with no debt. That makes self-sufficiency a lot easier.”
4:00pm
FANS FORUM
A couple more nuggets from this morning's Fans Forum with Steve Murrall and Gary Hooper, where it was asked whether Town would be able to sustain Championship football IF they can get up this season.
SM: “We have two budgets at the moment, one for the Championship and one for League One.
“We do have a budget in plan to sustain us in the Championship."
GH: “There is a significant uplift in what we would receive from the Football League and the Premier League in terms of TV and other rights, so one way or the other we could use that uplift to fund other salaries for next year.”

33 minutes: Town break at pace, and after Williams crosses deep into the box Roberts can only angle it over the bar.
3:36pm
31 minutes: GOAL 1-1 (Grigg) Will Grigg steps up to take it, and despite going the right way Foderingham can only push it into the side netting. The striker celebrates in front of the Town End, which does not go down well.

29 minutes: Penalty to Walsall after Brandy is brought down from behind by Miller clear pen.
Looks like both Ferry and Roberts booked for dissent.

3:22pm

COME ON!!!! WILLIAMS!!!!
....
Still got a hope at 70/1 - only 9 more goals to make up on the league leading scorer!! :-)
Our boss has a similar bet, but for James Collins to finish as the League's top scorer.
3:16pm
11 minutes: GOAL 1-0 TOWN (Williams) The striker cuts inside and gets a shot off which is blocked by captain Andy Butler, but the ball only thunders into the ground and loops over the top of keeper McCarey. Possibly an own goal, but who cares.
3:13pm
Eight minutes: Jamie Paterson gets the ball into the box for the visitors, but Febian Brandy can only head wide.
3:12pm
Seven minutes: Gary Roberts lobs a ball through to set Collins in the clear, but the assistant flags him (wrongly) offside.
3:09pm
Four minutes: A lovely plassing move involving nearly every Town player wins a corner, but James Chambers heads clear. Thompson works the ball back into the box, but Collins can only flick a header into the arms of McCarey.

A subject very close to all of our hearts, food, was also discussed.
SM: “We are looking at everything, and I have already had Jed moaning at me about the quality of the chips. I have to be honest, in the first week and a half that has not been my top priority. We will be looking at it, and we might need a bit of time to sort it out.

FANS FORUM
Steve Murrall and Gary Hooper were quizzed this morning on their long-term plan for Swindon Town, but the pair insisted they will not be drawing up any formal plan until the end of the season.
SM: “The first thing we wanted to do was to stabilise the club, because you were literally minutes away from administration. There is a lot to look at, and we need to understand what we need to do. We have objectives like getting the side into the Championship this season, and then look towards the redevelopment.
“Have we got a five or three year plan documented? No, not at the moment. That is something we will develop between now and next season. “

Still just the £53 in the charity pot so far, so hopefully we can add something today.

FANS FORUM
The pair were asked about potential development of the County Ground, and whether or not conerts will be held at the Town's home.
GH: “The new development is something we are looking at and has been well documented, and the chairman is looking at it. If there is an opportunity to develop we will look to do see.
“We will look at as many different ways of bringing in revenue as we can, and one of those is concerts. We have been approached by an entertainment company which wants to run six or eight concerts in this area a year. Some of the big names will be coming.
“The County Ground is a fantastic venue and we don’t use it enough, and we have been looking at utilising the Legends Lounge once or twice a month for smaller concerts or even a comedy night or something.”
Hooper also revealed the Town Ladies side will play on the County Ground pitch on April 7, while more effort will be made to engage younger fans and those living outside the town.
2:31pm
Walsal striker Will Grigg has been in sensational form of late. His five goals in the last two games have made him THE in-form strike in the division.
Town's central defensive pairing of Darren Ward and Aden Flint will have to make sure he doesn't find space in the penalty box, else he might do this...
2:29pm
Both teams are out to do their respective warm-ups. Walsall are wearing yellow. Not a clever idea in Swindon.

Paolo Di Canio's former number two Fabrizio Piccareta revealed earlier this week he and the rest of his staff had not received their final payment after leaving the club. Steve Murrall revealed the reasons why.
FABRIZIO PICCARETA
SM: “On February 26 Fabrizio and three others came to my office and said, these three didn’t want to resign it was only me.
“They didn’t turn up for work for the previous week, now I don’t know what jobs all the fans do, but if you went on the radio and said you were leaving and then didn’t turn up for work for the next week it would be taken as you had left.
“So, on February 26 I said you will all be paid as long as you sign these documents to say you will not be suing the club, and also that you return all the equipment you have.
“Nobody signed the documentation and the only one who took it away with them was Fabrizio, so he wasn’t going to get paid until he sends it back. As soon as it comes back he will be paid, simple as that.
“None of the others returned any of their equipment before March 1, so how they expected to get paid at the end of February I have no idea. They still haven’t signed to say they are not going to sue the club, and until they do I will not be paying wages out.
“They dropped us in it, let’s be honest, as they walked out on that Tuesday. It’s not very good behaviour.
“There is no conspiracy, nothing underhand, and the money is a pittance in terms of the budget of the club. We will pay them, but not until we get the documentation allowing us to.”

MONEY OWED ON TRANSFERS AND STAFF
Steve Murrall and Gary Hooper were of course asked about the transfer embargo currently on the club, the reasons for it, and when it will be lifted.
SM: “We don’t owe Shrewsbury anything as we paid them this week, and we have some others that need to be paid and we are in the process of doing that.
"That will lift the embargo, but when we took over, outside of our initial investment the Football League demanded £1.2million was put in an account to be ring-fenced in relation to the embargo.
"We didn’t have that in loose change, so we had to arrange that which should be done in the next few days. Hopefully by Monday, or 24 hours later to give me a break, I am confident we will be out of embargo. Paying football clubs is all taken care of and all fine.
SHREWSBURY HAD BEEN CHASING AN UNPAID £20k FOR JAMES COLLINS
GH: “Once it has all been sorted the new manager will be able to bring in new players if he wants to, but he has made it quite clear he is happy with the group of players he has at the moment.
"He has been out watching games, and it is very much his decision whether or not he brings in new players."

Why did you choose to get involved in the clun when you have no connection to Swindon Town?
GH: “Jed is a lifelong football supporter and when he looked at the situation here and Swindon he said he didn’t want a club to go the same way as Luton did, his club. He stepped in to make sure an old club remains within the Football League. The club here was in dire straights and that was the reason for stepping in. He’s a football supporter and he wanted to put something back in.”
SM: “I was approached by Jed who needed someone to bring an operational approach to running a business. We have worked together in the past and been successful. I had given up work to a degree and was comfortably enjoying myself, but I am a football fan even if I do support Birmingham. I was asked to bring those skills and that is what I came in for. We are not here to take massive wages or to take anything out of the club, all we want to do is bring this club back to a sustainable position. We won’t be throwing £10million into it but we will make sure what is here is maintained for us to be successful. I am so enjoying it you will not believe it. I was in the away end at Coventry, and it was amazing.”

The first question at this morning's Q&A related to any plans to show Town' away matches live in the Legends Lounge between now and the end of the season.
GH: "Any game that is currently going tobe shown live on Sky or the BBC or ITV, we will open the Legends Lounge, simple as that. Putting on beam backs cost a lot of money and are not feasible at the moment.”
1:48pm
Today will be the first home game former Swindon Town chief executive Nick Watkins will have missed in more than five years since joining the club under the Andrew Fitton regime.

A Question and Answer session was held in the Legends Lounge this morning with new board members Steve Murrall and Gary Hooper, with topics ranging from concerts at the County Ground to the future of the club coming under discussion.
Between now and kick-off we will bring you all the answers from the event, but the two started by introducing themselves.

STEVE MURRALL AND GARY HOOPER
Gary Hooper: “My role is to bring my experience from the last 20 years to the club, and to bring new revenue streams that have not been touched before. We want to utilise the ground outside of football. Clubs don’t make a lot of money as we know, because they don’t use the club and the ground. We will be looking to get the place open more than twice a week, because that can help the club go forward.”
Steve Murrall: “I will ensure that from a financial perspective we become a business that can support a good level of football but also bring in community based initiatives that will allow us to be part of the community more than we have been. “

TEAM NEWS
Nothing official until around 2pm, but here's what we know so far.
Troy Archibald-Henville and Miles Storey remain sidelined, Aaron Oakley misses out for Town having fractured his foot in midweek but otherwise Kevin MacDonald has a full squad at his disposal.
BROKEN FOOT: AARON OAKLEY
An unchanged line-up is expected, but Luke Rooney could force a first start since September on the right of midfield.
Youngsters Alex Ferguson and Connor Waldon will be included in the matchday squad, the club has confirmed.

Good afternoon ladies and gents and welcome to the County Ground, where Swindon Town are preparing to take on Walsall in League One.
New Town boss Kevin MacDonald makes his home debut in charge of the Robins, with a crowd of around 9,000 expected in SN1.
Walsall will be no pushover, despite being incredibly poor when Town won 2-0 at the Banks’s Stadium earlier in the season.
Dean Smith’s men have won eight of their last 11 games and are the in-form team in the division at present. Swindon could go top with a victory of their own. It’s set up to be a cracker.
Stick with us for all the build-up, followed by match updates and reaction.
Enjoy!

Needs to decide on his midfield and get Rooney or RDV back out wide

Williams was dreadful - how did he stay on???? His goal was a deflected handball and after that did nothing - didn't win one header, didn't hold the bal up once and made no decent runs - when he did get clear he crossed (poorly) without looking - needs to be benched!
.
Collins huffed and puffed and put himself about - but was always getting pulled out wide so has no chances
.
We need two wide players whipping balls in to him and A Rooney to attack

Macca was brilliant and by far the MOTM - so think Miller should join Williams on the bench

At the moment I'm in Don Rogers, about 3/4rs of the way along (nearer to stratton bank than town end) in the top half of the stand. They were moaning and groaning about any misplaced pass from about 2 minutes in to a new managers first home game in charge. Nothing like giving them a chance! Unfortunately a fair few of them like to shout at our own players as if that is going to help them and I'm just sick of it. Don't really know if its the same in the rest of the ground, could anyone advise if there's a decent area where the fans don't abuse our own players? Cheers

Reasonable result against an in form team. Good that we at least tried to pass the ball about a bit, it was certainly a better performance than some of the others at home this year.

Ferry had a decent game in centre mid but was supposed to be playing wide right. He is no right winger, plus by drifting inside it left no outlet on the right and exposed Nathan then Devera a lot. Reminiscent of Caddis in the Hart era, except Nathan doesn't bomb forward as much.
Not sure what Adam Rooney has to do to get a game. Should be him up front and pacy Williams on the wing. Collins and Williams have occasional good games, but don't combine well that's for sure.
At this stage no idea whatsoever who will win the league, no-one seems to want to. Our decent away form might just see us over the line....
Still it could be worse, we could have spent £500k on a right winger and played him at left back, and lost 5 on the bounce?

You can't handle the truth!!
I enjoyed the game today - take nothing away from Walsall you could see why they are one of the in-form teams in the league at the moment.
Two teams pressing each other (possibly why the ball was 'given' away at times) with the Town playing some decent stuff, from the back, being mainly camped in their half during the second half.
MoM was Alan McCormack IMO but most of the lads tried hard. When Simon scored the second goal it was evident to me the team were asking for more support from the fans with their gestures to the stands - if only we had the away support at the CG.
A good deep cross undone the defence at the death which was a bumm3r.
Just look at the results of the other teams at the top of the league today most of which are unable to string any wins together so the pressure is telling.
I just hope their fans are giving as much stick out to their players as some of our fans continue to do so to ours.
The truth is IMO only there is too much negativity and moaning from the home stands in general with the occasional but not, unfortunately, prolonged chants and shouts of support.
The players are only human and giving them more (HOME) support during the final few CG games this season might be the difference between automatic promotion or the play-offs (or another League One season).

Needs to decide on his midfield and get Rooney or RDV back out wide
.
Williams was dreadful - how did he stay on???? His goal was a deflected handball and after that did nothing - didn't win one header, didn't hold the bal up once and made no decent runs - when he did get clear he crossed (poorly) without looking - needs to be benched!
.
Collins huffed and puffed and put himself about - but was always getting pulled out wide so has no chances
.
We need two wide players whipping balls in to him and A Rooney to attack
.
Macca was brilliant and by far the MOTM - so think Miller should join Williams on the bench
.
Jekyll and Hyde at the moments - lets hope the other one from today (not sure which way round they are) turns up again on out travels!
.
Board seem very open and honest and glad the Q&A seems a success
.
Said there would be two sides so and it appears the board have done nothing wrong
.
Also they must have some money as they have had to stump up £1.2m into a new ring fenced account to get us out of the embargo - so nothing to do with unpaid bills!
.
Last instalment going in on Monday and we can then sign players and not a day too soon now
.
I was pro giving the lads a chance - but after today we need fresh ideas on the pitch - winger and forward and even a CM would go a miss in that order

Steaming-in wrote:Much what I would say. Think Den's comments also reflect the game I watched. It will be more challenging to play a more flexible system and it showed at times with players getting caught out of position. If we are going to do this there has to be a front man who can hold the ball. Much as I think Collins and Williams have different qualities they don't play well together and neither have the first touch to hold the ball or draw the foul. Walsall had a disciplined back line who let Williams and Collins run offside repeatedly. They were also one of the best counter attacking sides at the CG this year. Grigg constantly irritated and unsettled our back line (a bit Austin like) and Patterson worried me with his pace and ability to play sharp one-twos.
Well, I thought we tried to play football but came up against a good counter- attacking side. We tried to play to feet a lot more than in recent months but it just didn't happen I the last 3rd.
It was actually a good game and a draw was a fair result.
I really don't understand some of the negative comments on here.
If we can keep trying to play like that it will be exciting and we'll stand a chance of doing something.

We tried to play the way many having been calling for but it will take time to be comfortable doing it, especially at home as the pressure is affecting the players.
No wonder our away form is better as they do not receive the flak they get at the CG as soon as they make a mistake. All these perfect people should look at themselves and remember how good they were week in week out on the football pitch.
Who cares how Kmac stood on the touch line why the F*** does it matter.
The reactions on here are why we are struggling at home. Thank god the majority of our remaining games are away.
We do need some players in to refresh the squad. Hollands must be close to recovering fitness, a possibilty ? We need someone capable of delivering a good ball into the box because at the moment we are not supplying Collins, put the ball in the box so he can attack it and you have a different striker (ask Pompey).
It is frustrating but sometimes I wonder if we are third from bottom not third from the top.

How, how, how, how did some of their players get away with the duckin'n'diving, pullin, pushin'n'shovin' that they did and at the Town End just would not put the ball in the corner D, to take the kick.
How did Westcarr stay on the pitch ??
Sorry but the ref was a disgrace and the linesman in front of the DR, well ??? has he ever read the rule book.
That said, I will not have a go at SuperMac but I suspect he found out a lot more about his players, the chosen line-up and the tactics employed today, than he has in all his short time here put together.
We had little or no balance today and the shape was not good. Our hitherto erstwhile defence decided to commit footie suicide in the last 10/15 minutes, why, we need to answer those questions and address them quickly. I must admit to a certain degree of disappointment in our performance today but I do feel the writing has been on the wall for a while, Bury for example, so not a total surprise. As we are we are not good enough to go up and stay there. I trust Supermac to get things sorted, but fear the solutions may come in a bit late, time is against him, and that is not his fault. I'm still confident that we will make some good finish to the season, and should make the dreaded play offs at least. Tuesday I would start Rooney, as on his last two appearances he has tried to make the difference.

A win and a draw is not a bad start, especially when the win came in his first game in charge - immediately following one of the worst Town performances I have ever seen. I'll take folded arms and quiet authority if it brings us 67% of the remaining points on offer.
Thank you for that. I think some need to forget Wilson's way because of what happened. I don't remember Ardilles doing anything different to Wilson or Kevin but he would never be considered poor because of it.

Maybe the reason we are not playing well at home is the immense expectation that the players feel at having to perform magnificently every time they come out at the CG - or at least that seems to be the expectations of nearly everyone on here. When you go to away games the atmosphere is normally a lot better due to the proximity of the fans and the fact that we don't get on the players back every couple of minutes. Last week at Coventry was a prime example - get behind the team, create a noise and they will respond. lets do that at the CG instead of waiting for the team to do it so we can back them. 400 odd Walsall supporters today and they provided for their team what we did at Coventry amongst other away games. Shame on some of you for even calling yourselves supporters!

Cannot understand this constant berating of Jay Mac I think he is an excellent defender and apart from the odd loose pass played well. He really would benefit from a good winger in front of him.
Their second came about by Nathan going off and Simon not being in front of Devera, it resulted in only the second really decent cross - the other one being from their right across the face of the goal. It was clear that lad was going to bury it and he for me was one of the best players on the pitch.

Walsall tore us to pieces when they broke - we just don't have that pace in the side and our defence gets pulled all over the place. Little composure from some of our more experienced players and the limitations we have were cruelly exposed - Miller needs resting and Jay Mc still plays like his brain is missing. We were second to the ball most of the afternoon and had no shape or tactical organisation. Midfield created little. The attack offered almost nothing. Collins is a poor target man and too slow and Williams is having an atrocious run. Roberts lacks pace - we are slow and predictable in too many areas. At least there were times when we tried to play it on the floor, so an improvement on the Bury match. Hardly a match to make you feel optimistic about the run in though.

His final interview on SKY recently is simply beyond belief and PDC needs urgent help, hopefully in his own hospital in Italy. He is deluded.
The people who post on here hoping for a miracle need to go to church or somewhere similar, because, we are sure as hell not going up this year!!
Of the promotion candidates this year who is seriously going to survive in the Championchip? Maybe a club the size of Sheff U if they get some cash. Other than that no-one including ourselves. Let's not kid ourselves STFC would need huge investment beyond the funds current owners.
Not negative just my own opinion. Also thought we tried really hard today but players are not used the the new regime as yet but SF is playing out of position and I firmly believe Willo is a wide man, need a fox in the box. .

Yesterday was always going to be tricky against a side so hard to beat (but it didn't sound pretty although 2nd half sounded a bit one-way)
.
Results will always start to get dodgy now as we're nearing the business end of the season....none of the other top 7 teams are making a run for it other than Yeovil and we just need to give the new set-up a bit more time but wins at Brentford and Yeovil would all but seal a play-off spot and then we can focus on promotion:
.
Looking at the last 10 Form Guide:
Doncaster: W-4 D-3 L-3 = Pts-15
Sheff Utd-: W-5 D-3 L-2 = Pts-18
========
Swindon--: W-4 D-5 L-1 = Pts-17
Tranmere-: W-3 D-1 L-7 = Pts-10
Yeovil-----: W-7 D-2 L-1 = Pts-23
Brentford-: W-3 D-3 L-4 = Pts-12
-------------
Bournemff: W-5 D-0 L-5 = Pts-15
Coventry-: W-6 D-1 L-3 = Pts-19
Walsall---: W-6 D-3 L-1 = Pts-21
...
The others are out of it now.
.
I can see 74pts being enough for the play-offs 88pts is a possible title winning count and 85pts an auto slot.
.
BIG ask but win every game and we're champions!....beat all 4 of the other Top 6 away from home and we can afford to lose a game elsewhere and still win the title.

Will it remain this poor? If Wolves come down etc we may be back to the Norwich, Leeds, Leicester, Saints days etc where they dominate

Walsall are very good side but in the 2nd half they were never in it,but did look dangerous on the 3 or 4 breaks they had and resulted in the 2nd goal.

Or even let them go due to Martin's attitude and Hollands injury but got in Pack and BWP (wouldn't need Green as Ritchie wouldn't have been sold)

Then I think a lot of the dropped points would not have happened - 3 from 12 at home for example

Had that even been a pretty average 7 from 12 we'd be level - but a more realistic 10 from 12 as expected from a promotion side would see us clear now

Maybe Bournemouth thought they'd acquired the last piece of their jigsaw when they signed Ritchie - but look at them now. Chris Martin came to us with a fine pedigree but had trouble finding the net. I don't think we've recovered from the loss of Hollands, who added graft and guile to central midfield, and Ritchie, who gave us real width. Our forwards are never going to get a decent return of goals with the sort of service they received from central midfield and the flanks yesterday. With both Miller and Roberts in the side, we look pedestrian, as neither has the drive or pace to get past people. I hasten to add that I wasn't at Coventry, so my apologies to them if they played well there.

The reverse happened yesterday at the CG with Walsall fans being penned in one area and traditionally when the Town put in an iffy performance there is not the rousing vocal support that is forthcoming when they are on the attack and looking like they will score every time they press forward which gets the fans going.

If we had made the big push in January, as suggested by LR, maybe we would be sitting pretty now. But I think that is oversimplifying things. If PDC had used more of his energy managing the considerable resources he did have at his disposal and a bit less of it taking countless opportunities to attack the owners, Black wouldn't have become disillusioned with it all. You can't keep holding a gun to somebody's head and expect him to hang around forever just accepting it.

As MacDonald is rated by many as a good coach, wonder if he will change formation for Tuesdays game.
I would like to see Miller and McCormack in the middle with Ferry being given a free role, Roberts and Luke Rooney wide and Williams up front on his own to use his pace then usual back 4 depending if Thompson fit.
old town robin

Our back 4 were as shaky as I've seen them this season and did not get too much support from midfield, not sure about the penalty, as said it didn't take too much of a touch for the yellow babies to hit the deck, For their second, if Thompson had not gone off injured they would not have got that cross in, bad decision by Kev to bring Devera on, he was so far off the pace it was embarrassing to see how he was left for dead, out of position, slow as a cart horse, there was only ever going to be one result and that was a very good goal scored by them. IMO when Nat went off, Macca should have moved to right back and been either replaced by Navarro or Ferry should have taken macca's place in midfield and Luke Rooney brought on which was the obvious sub until Nat got injured. Poor tactical decision, but I guess thought we would defend better than that with only injury time to play.
there were times we played some neat football and I was optimistic we might break them down and create chances, but with no natural wingers with pace, we seemed to breakdown in the final third and needlessly gave the ball away.
Not going to say anything good or bad about Collins or Williams. their only excuse is they're not getting the service. We go to Brentford on Tuesday and if Thompson is out injured it will be a big blow if Devera is expected to fill the gap, he is no where near match fit based on his 10 minutes on the pitch yesterday. Kev needs to get 3 players in immediately, half this team is running on empty and without reinforcements and any challenge to the run in will be seriously in doubt

That said not enough focus was put onto the very poor ref, a few overtures of "we only get" was about all it amount ed to when the guy deserved a whole raft of stick for putting up with the acting antics of feigning injury etc, from which they got their penalty, indeed his display was the most woeful on the park.
Westcarr and Brandy when they retire will have no problem finding acting jobs, however if they do get promoted they will be surely found out at the higher level.
Meanwhile back at Liddington SuperMac has his work cut out on several fronts, we didn't become a poor team in a week for sure, but that said home performances and tactics by both managers this season are in need of revision. Perhaps the supporters should also look inwardly and get more behind the team and the new manager, yes there are areas that need improvement as Wilson used to say, but SuperMac needs time, this is not a team made up of players he would necessarily pick or choose and we are at a level lower than that he is used to, so patience is key. If we don't go up this year, so what, at least we have owners now putting steps in place to ensure there is a club here next season to support.

Do we have the personnel to make radical subs, I don't think any -radically- different players were ever recruited by PDC they all seemed to be much of a muchness to a point. We definitely do need some fresh faces but I think listening to SuperMac on the radio after the game, he is going to wait and see for a bit, bit it seemed he has a couple of players in mind, which is re assuring.

Just bringing Paolo's outcasts back into the fold could be sufficient to get us up. Luke Rooney is showing promise again, Benson is good with his first touch and at bringing others into the game, and he's not a bad poacher. Caddis could be good on the wing or right midfield. These would help by Kevin time while he assesses all the players at his disposal. If Hollands were fit enough to come back then he would surely help to push us over the finishing line.

Rooney(A) on for Collins was the correct call IMO.
De Vita on for Roberts i did not agree with as i thought Roberts was playing ok but De Vita did ok with his wing play and the space he creates.
Devera on for Thompson,no choice, yes McCormack could have played RB but he was outstanding in midfield and we did not want to take that away.
That leaves Navarro,Rooney(L),Th
ompson(L) and Bedwell on the bench.
Rooney(L) on for Roberts would have been like for like.

Yesterday I don't think Rooney for Collins was right - should have been or Williams as he was woeful - and would have given us two targets in the middle
.
Then I would have taken Miller off and had Ferry move central - with L Rooney going wide
.
Granted that is not overly radical but would have conpletely changed how we were playing - ie with no width at all
.
Not based on yesterday but other changes could see us go 433
.
Collins or Rooney in the middle an told stay central
.
Then Williams and RDV wide - told to stay wide to provide outlets - but If it goes right the left one goes in central and vice versa (Either Rooney or Roberts could be alternatives for these roles)
.
That sort of thing is what I meant - A plan B really - granted we may need a new player or two to change system easier in the medium term - but we can still do it in the game with what we have as suggested above
.
So as I said yesterday the next few weeks will let us see more from KM if he has this in him - that was a bi criticism of PdC only one or twice did we ever see a plan B - it was normally if A isn't working I'll change someone to see if A works now - I felt yesterday was bit like that

Although Macca may have been good he was guilty of hoofing the ball up field without always looking to see if we had a player there to take the ball forward. I can see the point of kicking over their defence to beat off side but giving them the ball to punish you with is not a good idea. However that said I still think yesterdays game was one where SuperMac tried a few ideas to see what the players are capable of.
Players play positions and tactics to the orders of the management, but next season if he is still with us I can see Ward having a bigger say on field.
I would like to know though what in the dickens went on with our defence in those last 15/20 minutes, some of the back passing etc was unbelievably bad for a set of players who have up till now been superb. Previous goal keepers would not have dealt with the situations so admirably as Wes.

They were one of the quickest breaking sides I have seen at the County Ground. Our football was excellent first 25 minutes be we are only being let down by some off form players which happens to all clubs. Just look at Bounemouth who are affected by injuries and Tranmere who were coasting along but have hit the rocky patch at home with injuries and off form players. I always feel it is actually harder at home as teams park the bus but our form away is fantastic so keep the faith. With all the turmoil we have had at the club the players deserve medals for hanging in there to be honest not slating every two minutes for a miss placed pass. We are still third from top after all that has happened this season off the pitch. Fickle fans not just here but up the A420 and Bounemuff to name a few. Oxon-Red wrote:Totally agree good post and that's how I see the game. Some on here seem to think Walsall were just going to lay down and let us play, well chimps they didn't and gave us one hell of a game and were an excellent team and possibly could have won it. Give the new guy time to see what's what and I am sure he will act accordingly.

The players are only human and giving them more (HOME) support during the final few CG games this season might be the difference between automatic promotion or the play-offs (or another League One season).Chish and Fips wrote:negativity and truth are different things its just the truth hurts sometimesalchafreds wrote: sometimes its not negative just the plain truthand sometimes it better to give people a chance ... 61 - I was referring to the 16-0 run time
.
Had Black suddenly not pulled the plug but seen out the year and allowed us to sign up Martin and Hollands until the end of the year
.
Or even let them go due to Martin's attitude and Hollands injury but got in Pack and BWP (wouldn't need Green as Ritchie wouldn't have been sold)
.
Then I think a lot of the dropped points would not have happened - 3 from 12 at home for example
.
Had that even been a pretty average 7 from 12 we'd be level - but a more realistic 10 from 12 as expected from a promotion side would see us clear now
.
Granted it may not have happened we will never know - but the team looked unbelievable during that period - we are balanced, confident and had competition in key areas
.
You may not agree but if we don't go up I will always look back and say we blew it by what happened then

An observation I have made is one similar to that made some years ago by Andrew Fitton, the County Ground is a quiet stadium. When we are playing away the supporters are clearly audible most the way through the game when listening on the radio. When we are at home there are long periods of obvious silence, even from the T/E. Times like yesterday the team needed us behind them but not on their backs.

Ferry, Hollands, Ritchie and and on form De Vita were all at the top of their game.
In contrast we now have a off form De Vita, an inconsistent Roberts (superb at Tranmere away, but apart from that?), Ferry has not been 100% fit and played out of position, and Miller steady but not as dynamic as Hollands and doesn't cover as much ground. Macca has though been excellent in the last 2 games.
So without reinforcements I would change to Roberts right wing, Ferry and Macca in the middle, and Williams on left wing. A Rooney and Collins up front. The Ferry on right wing experiment hasn't been a success for me and needs a change.
One thing that may influence that is that in the Brentford home game Brentford played Donaldson on the wing against Ritchie I think and he won every header, before going up front to score their goal. Not sure if they've been doing that since but it would be worth thinking about maybe even sticking Miller out wide to combat that. Looking forward to the Macca v Dougie battle on Tuesday should be interesting. Fancy a card for Macca....

Oi Den! wrote:Hi Den, I have re-read my post and it is a little contradictory. What I was trying to say was that our first 11 is as good as anything, in my view, but we lack numbers and options to cover loss of form or injuries.
Pewsham, although I agree with the general tenor of your post, I think you contradict yourself in the second para. The fact that we need a couple of players to be a top two side surely means that, without them, we are not as good as anything in this division. Being two players short can make the difference of several positions in the League table. I don't think we looked anything like a promotion side yesterday. Walsall may not have had as much of the ball as us but they had a verve about them that we were sadly lacking.

No,we have great support, but there must be a weak link somewhere at the ground, probably the Stratton Bank.
There have always been some massive atmospheres at the CG and great singing,no help from the North Stand!(joke).
Paolo never thanked us either,as far as i can remember, but i am sure we done him proud.

Oh yeh, the one many begged to stay, and he turned his back in the dark of night, and went.
Will be remembered for all the wrong reasons, but read the Nick Watkins interview for the real goings on, and there will be more this week, IF, he comes back to the boards invitation to conclude matters. Has he been offered another job yet ? Nah !!!! thought not.

We need to take a lead from the Portsmouth fans - AMAZING!!...and made most of us laugh with a couple of their chants:
You're so sh1t it's only 2-0
and
You're not that good we lose every week....or something like that..
.
Come on folks lets just go for it and keep the town players believing that we're all behind them no matter what for the next 6 weeks!

Rumour KM has three players lined up if we get out of Embargo.
Midfield shambles yesterday, no tracking back, no width. Thought Miller had a good game.........

What about giving Raffa a go up front? ...as this is his natural position put him alongside Collins or Williams....but I'm tempted to give Rooney a bit of a run despite his lacking a bit of pace.
.
Strength and determination required in these tough 'end-of-season' days - no time for feint hearts!!...like last time we were at this end of league 1.
.
We were on just 3pts more that season after 36 games....after beating Southampton away on my birthday a great night that one!....let's hope we're on 66pts by the time my birthday comes round this Saturday as it would mean that Brentford had been despatched.
