Pressure off Walsall and on Town, says McCormack

Captain Alan McCormack Captain Alan McCormack

CAPTAIN Alan McCormack believes Walsall have nothing to lose as they travel to the County Ground looking to take advantage of Swindon’s poor recent home record.

The Robins failed to win any of their home games in February, including a defeat to Bury which was their fourth 1-0 loss on their own patch this season.

Walsall go into the game on a superb run which has put them in contention for a play-off place, and McCormack is convinced they will be buoyed by Town’s recent home troubles.

“Walsall are playing very well, and the manager has done a tremendous job having battled relegation for a few seasons,” he said. “He has been building on his squad and building players, and it has come to the front now just how good they are.

“They are going to be a dangerous side for us that’s for sure, and they have nothing to lose coming here knowing our record’s not great.

“From what I heard we dominated the game up there (2-0 win) and deserved the win, but after that they went on a massive run and that doesn’t happen to poor teams.

“They have good organisation and experience to win games, and that makes them twice as hard for us to beat at the weekend.

“But we have a new manager, and we have seen how teams can go on an amazing run with a new manager, and I think we can be that team.”

The Robins have to travel to promotion rivals Brentford, Yeovil, Doncaster and Sheffield United during a difficult looking run-in, and McCormack is confident his side can produce the goods on the road.

“I don’t think we have lost too many away from home, and I think the pressure not being on us there has helped us a lot,” he said.

“Our home record hasn’t been great so maybe some teams have taken us for granted and thought we wouldn’t be that good away from home.

“It has definitely kick-started us, and we have 12 cup finals and 12 battles now. Some games may not be pretty when we go away on a Tuesday night, but at this stage three points is all that matters.”

All those 0-1 and many of the draws could have been so different if out dynamic duo up front converted half the chances created.

But in fairness, how many times have we seen goalkeepers down here playing out of their skins. An early goal should settle the boys nerves and as Walsall are usually considered to be a footballing side rather than those that park the bus we should see an open game.

And therein lies the problem under the Italian, we never had a plan B which resulted in us playing hoof ball which the boys upfront could say is a contributing reason why their strike rate has not been as good as it should be, which I guess is fair comment. We have to keep the ball down and play to our strengths and I'm sure the goals will come.

Lot of difficult games coming up, really need a win from this one. Macca's probably right, we will be under more pressure than Walsall to get the win, but if we play anywhere near as well as we can there should be no problems. Predicting a 2-1. Tight game but town to come out on top.
