RUGBY: Devizes 78 Supermarine 5
5:00pm Tuesday 5th March 2013 in Sport
DEVIZES cruised to another bonus-point success over the Southern Counties South bottom side ahead of their summit showdown with Trowbridge this weekend.
The visitors were a spirited outfit and tested the Saddlebacks defence early on but, after Tom Moon was adjudged to have ben held up over the line, Marine’s defences broke as James Gaiger burst through, Andy Thompson converting.
Rory Brown followed with a score outside, Thompson adding the extras before Craig Bryant was adjudged to have been held up.
Paul Kuipers touched down to get the scoreboard moving again and Thompson added the extras, as he did when full-back Chris Barter went through for the bonus-point score with under half an hour gone.
Gaiger and skipper Tom Collins combined for the latter to cross but Devizes were stunned when Bryant was shown a red card for a late hit.
It made little difference as tries from Jorge Wadman and Mark Warburton pushed the Saddlebacks further clear, Marine responding with their only score.
Chris Lewis burrowed over from close range and Gaiger scored his second after bursting through tackles.
Moon and Tom Reed were again denied tries, but Thompson eventaully burst through for his second try of the season and then converted a deserved effort from Reed.
Tom Moon and Seb Hutchings made their first starts of the season in the pack with Julian Taylor dropping to the bench and John Angell unavailable. The backs remained unchanged for a third game in a row.
Captain Collins ended proceedings with a try from close range after an outrageous dummy from the base of a ruck.
