Jed begins recruitment drive
KEVIN MacDonald will have the Swindon Town board’s full backing in the loan market, chairman Jed McCrory has confirmed.
The former Aston Villa assistant boss was named as the new manager of the Robins on Thursday and will take charge of his first match at Coventry this afternoon.
With connections in high places in the game, McCrory is hopeful MacDonald will be able to attract top-flight talent to the County Ground, and has pledged his support to the 52-year-old in the pursuit of promotion to the Championship.
“He’s obviously not come here knowing he’s not going to get players because he just wouldn’t be here if he didn’t have the opportunity to win and develop. I’m keen to give him the players he wants, as are the rest of the board and it will be Kevin’s choice,” he said.
“People hadn’t heard of the James Milners and others like that he brought through at Villa and maybe he’ll find one out there and pull him through. Kevin has been told that if he needs players he can have players to bring the squad together.
“He knows the game inside out and I feel totally calm around him. He’s such a calming influence around the place that when he says he needs a player, he needs a player. At the minute he just wants to look at what he’s got and just take a week to evaluate the whole squad.
“Because of his credentials as a coach, and he’s well renowned throughout the Premier League, I think he would definitely give us more opportunity with Premier League clubs to loan us their players.”
Two players who remain linked with Swindon Town are Danny Green and Marlon Pack. Moves for the duo fell through on transfer deadline day in January, but McCrory said they could be resurrected should MacDonald be keen to do so.
“I think it’s got to be Kevin’s decision as a manager, he may have a different view on how we play,” he said. “Let’s let him get the players he wants, let’s let him get the style of football he wants to bring in and go from there. If he wants Marlon and Danny then I’ll get on the phone now. I’ll do what he requires to get this team up.”
